The Lagos State Government has sealed the Alaba International Market, Ojo Local Government Area, part of the state over what it termed poor waste disposal practices among others.

This disclosure is contained in a post by the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, October 23, 2023.

Wahab in the post listed some of the other offences including failure to pay their waste bills as well as gross environmental sanitation offences.

What the Lagos State Commissioner is saying

The post from Wahab reads,

  • “Alaba International Market, Ojo has been sealed up for poor waste disposal practices, failure to pay their waste bills, and gross environmental sanitation offences.’’

Officials of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), KAI, and Lagos State Taskforce, carried out the enforcement on Monday morning in line with the directive of the commissioner.

The closure was part of measures to maintain a standard hygiene environment in the market in particular and the state in general.

What you should know

The Lagos State Government has been on a market sealing and demolition exercise in the past couple of weeks. The enforcement exercise is the latest in the closure of markets and demolition of illegal structures by the state government.

Some of the markets recently sealed and reopened due to environmental and indiscriminate waste disposal issues include Mile 12 international market, Owode Onirin market, Ladipo Market, Oyingbo Market, Alamutu Ologede Market, and Ile-Epo Oke Odo Market.
