FG invalidates SIM integration using BVN generated NIN, applicants must visit NIMC offices
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Linkedin

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has said that applicants must complete their National Identification Number (NIN) registration even if their Bank Verification Number (BVN) has generated NIN.

This is as NIMC pointed out that NIN generated by the BVN can only be used after it has been updated at the NIMC enrollment centre.

This disclosure was made by NIMC in a statement through a tweet post on its official Twitter handle on Tuesday, January 12, 2021.

NIMC in a statement said,

  • “You must complete your NIN registration even if your BVN has generated a NIN. If your NIN was generated due to the BVN record harmonization with the National Identity Database, you will not have access to the NIMC Mobile App and your NIN-SIM integration will be invalid.”

NIMC in its statement insists that all affected applicants must visit any of the NIMC enrolment centres to update their biometrics and validate their NIN.

What this means

This means that every applicant for National Identification Number must visit an NIMC office for his or her biometrics/data capture, with the provision of every relevant personal information, even if they generate their NIN from any other sources including BVN.

What you should know

  • The Federal Government had announced the approval of the development and release of an improved National Identity Number slip and a Mobile App as part of its policy to improve the process of obtaining NIN and linking it to SIMs.
  • The NIMC Mobile App and the improved NIN slip provides a secure channel for all Nigerians and legal residents to easily verify and authenticate their identities on the go using smartphones. It also enables them to link the NIN to their phone numbers.

Who’s updating their twitter? I went to their office and was told they are on strike and not working. How can an organization that is on strike be twitting or is it a robot or it’s a fake Twitter handle

I think the NIMC should help us off on how to link how bvn with the NIN.
Secondly some of us register did NIN in some years back and the sim card used to register it then got lost so how do we retrieve that back with another sim card. So I suggest create a link to follow to fix all this because when you go to the center where NIN is been registered is over crowded in this situation of pandemic out there please they should find other means for some of us.
    Thank you.

With the present arrangement of things in NIN offices it will take more than two years of continuous efforts to have all Nigerians captured in NIN DATA BASE. So NCC should get ready to disconnect most network phone users in the country except something different from what we are seeing done.

I keep wondering what is the difference between BVN and NIN? Is it not ideal that we have tan harmonised number? Why do we have to be reinventing the wheel in Nigeria?

We are we doing as if we are in 18th century. The people with BVN were fully captured. We can’t NIMC link up with the BVN data base. This is not rocket science.

Maybe someone has to challenge this useless directive in court.
I have not seen any difference between the dataset captured for BVN and the dataset required for NIN.
    A typical Nigerian has;
BVN, Drivers License, Voters Card, as well as Nigerian Passport. Now NIMC also want such a person to dedicate every hour of his day for weeks risking Covid-19 exposure to update his BVN generated NIN.
