Thato Motlanthe replaces Nik Kershaw as MTN Group’s Investor Relations Executive

MTN Group has announced the appointment of Thato Motlanthe as its new Investor Relations Executive. His appointment takes effect from September 1, 2019.  

Motlanthe will replace Nik Kershaw who left MTN Group at the end of May 2019 and will report to Ralph Mupita, MTN Group Chief Financial Officer (CFO). 

Announcing Motlanthe’s appointment, the MTN Group CFO said, “We are pleased to have secured someone of Thato’s experience and leadership profile.”

Thato will play a critical role in the management and building of the investor base for MTN Group, as well as ensuring that the communication of the investment case of the company’s ‘Digital Operator’ strategy remains clear and compelling for stakeholders.

Motlanthe’s reaction: Reacting to his appointment, Thato said, “I am excited to join a company with an incredibly strong pan-African and Middle East footprint, great market positions and attractive assets. MTN Group is well-positioned to capture growth from digital and financial inclusion.” 

Motlanthe’s professional career: Motlanthe is a graduate of Financial Analysis & Portfolio Management from the University of Cape Town. 

He joined MTN from Absa Asset Management, where he held the role of Portfolio Manager, co-managing the flagship funds within the Equities franchise.  

Prior to this, he held senior positions at STANLIB Asset Management, Citigroup Global Markets and UBS Investment Bank over a career spanning 16 years.

About MTN: MTN (formerly known as M-Cell) was founded in 1994 and has over 200 million subscribers. It is a South African Multinational telecommunications company, operating in many African, European and Asian countries. The company is one of the three largest telecommunications firms in Africa. It is headquartered in Johannesburg.  

MTN Nigeria is part of MTN Group, Africa’s leading cellular telecommunications. On May 16, 2001, MTN became the first GSM network to make a call, following the globally-lauded Nigerian GSM auction conducted by the Nigerian Communications Commission earlier in the year.
