Kuda Bank has responded to the viral video of a customer being dragged out of its office by armed police officers.

The video, which was published on Twitter showed a Kuda client being dragged while lying flat on the floor, and has since sparked outrage among Nigerians.

The bank has today responded in a statement revealing the details of what occurred at its office, leading to policemen dragging the customer in the now-viral video.

What happened?

It said the unfortunate scenario occurred as a result of the Kuda Fraud Team placing a freeze on the consumer’s account.

It all started with a message from Kuda Bank informing the customer that it was conducting a review on his account after several efforts to reach him.

“Hi Abdulqudus, We tried reaching you on your mobile line but efforts have been futile, please be informed that we are conducting a review with regards to the recent transactions made on your account to enable us better understand and profile your account appropriately,” Kuda’s message read.

Kuda added, “Please let us know the source and purpose of the inflow.”

However, in the course of clarifying the account freeze, it seems things went a little out of hand.

The victim’s brother @Ayam_Jamotech took to his Twitter to explain the event. He said, “So my brother went to @kudabankhelp office today at Yaba to know the reason why his account was locked and yet not to be opened after dropping his proof to them that it’s legit money and not fraud money at all. So funny how when he got there this morning. They sent their mopol.”

The allegations were confirmed when a video surfaced showing the victim being manhandled by the armed police officer.

Kuda Bank’s response

Kuda MFB gave an official statement about the worrisome situation in their offices.

  • The statement partly reads, “It has come to our attention that a couple of videos are being circulated online regarding the experience of one of our customers yesterday. The videos show the customer being forcefully escorted off our premises by members of the Nigerian Police Force. We wish to unequivocally state that Kuda Microfinance Bank Limited (“Kuda MFB”) does not condone or support such violence in any manner, particularly against its customers.”
  • The Bank said that its actions regarding account closure are meant to conform to existing laws put down by the apex bank. It said, “as a financial institution licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria, we have an obligation to comply with the mandates of all applicable government and law enforcement agencies, supported by the appropriate documentation.”
  • However, the Bank said that the manhandling of the consumer was because the customer failed to cooperate with the law enforcement agencies during their investigation of the alleged criminal activity on the customer’s account.
  • The Bank added that no staff of the Kuda MFB was involved in the unfortunate incident that was captured in the video.

I don’t know what people are looking in all these small micro finance banks. They bring a whole lot of problems and embarrassment to customers most of the time. There are a whole lots of first tier bank you can have an account with, that will definitely give you peace of mind rather than bank with tiny Banksthat gives problems and hassles. A good lesson to learn from

They have NOT “concluded” anything. There are AML laws and regulations that require banks to freeze and verify certain transactions. Merely providing documents is NOT “proof” (regardless of what his brother says) until the authenticity and/or validity of such documents are ascertained.

I agree with you. KudaMFB has been nothing but a great bank, I’ve had lots of great experiences with the bank since I opened an account with them. Kuda is doing wonderfully well, things like this is expected, since nobody expected the bank gain these much grounds, the bank has liberated me from first tier banks headaches of failed transactions. With Kuda, reversal of failed transactions are almost immediate.

Nigerian banks are in business on basis of licenses issued to them by the CBN, which (among other things) require them to obey the CBN’s directives. Accordingly, if the CBN prohibits them from engaging in cryptocurrency transactions, they are duty-bound (at the risk of losing their licenses or otherwise being fined or penalized) to do so. Customers should know such elementary things.

If any of your laws are violated, closed the account and give the customer his/her overdraft.

If any crimes are committed, you do not return the loot to the suspect.

There are AML laws and regulations in Nigeria (and throughout most the globe) that requires financial institutions to freeze suspicious accounts and transactions until their bona fides can be ascertained.

The freeze on his account was result of a Bank order gotten from Court to Freeze and arrest the Account owner over an Investigation. It happened to me at GTBank because of a POS payment I received. If you are innocent, just go with the Police and call a lawyer. This doesn’t make Kuda a Bad Bank. As an Ex Banker, I have seen such Bank Order as a customer service and my supervisor had to call Police to arrest the Account holder when he showed up to the Bank.

If your staff did not instruct your security man he would not have been badly manhandled the way he was. Honestly your organisation left a sour taste. And your organisation waited days after the video went viral before coming online to explain. Now question is, if you claim.no wrong doing what step or steps did you take to ameliorate the damage caused? We are waiting to read that.

Hate to see folks being “manhandled” but if people refuse to conduct themselves appropriately (eg, refusing to leave a place of business when asked to do so), they are asking to be treated inappropriately.
