The Nigerian Stock Exchange released its 2014 stock market performance with details revealing various aspects of the bourse and how they performed in 2014. We know 2014 was a bad year but not all the stocks did badly and as we reported here a few weeks back some stock returned over 100%. This brings us to the performance of a group of stocks that to a large extent influence how investors invest their money. A popular was of grouping are Large Cap Stocks, Mid Cap Stocks and Small Cap Stocks. For those who don’t understand, this are stocks classified as either Large Cap, Mid Caps or Small Caps Stocks;
Large Cap Stocks – Stocks with a market value of over $1billion (N180billion)
Mid Cap Stocks – Stocks with a market value of between $150million and $1billion
Small Cap Stocks- are stocks with a market capitalization of less than $150million
Performance in 2014
Small Caps (+32.78%)
Mid Caps (+23.53%)
Large Caps (-21.43%) It’s important to note that large caps form about 90% of the total market capitalization by our estimates so it’s no surprise why the All share index returned a negative 16% at the end of 2014.
