Nigeria's next president should remove fuel subsidy in a way that protects poor people - British High Commissioner

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, has explained why there has been a surge in the number of Nigerians applying for visas to the United Kingdom (UK) in recent times.

The UK envoy had attributed the increase to the fact that the UK, which likes to welcome talent, had become an attractive destination for Nigerians, especially students to study and work.

This was made known on Sunday by Laing while appearing at a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) forum in Abuja.

Liang said that there are people of Nigerian origin in the UK and as such people will like to go to where they have family and friends, adding that the English Language makes it a lot easier.

Increase in visa application: Laing also revealed that the increase in application for student visas by Nigerians was due to the change in policy, which now allows master’s or PhD up to a minimum of 2 years to work in the UK upon the completion of their programs.

She, however, in her speech, noted that the UK government was mindful of the situation and was in talks with the Nigerian government to avoid causing a brain drain, especially in the health sector.

The UK envoy said,

  • “You know, there are obviously people of Nigerian origin in the UK. So, people like to go where they have family or where they have friends. Secondly, the English language obviously makes it a lot easier.
  • “Third is education, and people who have studied will want to return. And I think you know, we are a welcoming country and we want to welcome talents, whether it’s people coming to study, or people coming to work.
  • “So, a lot of Nigerians will be tuned to the UK and we have seen actually a very big increase in requests for Nigerian student visas. That is partly because we have changed our policy.
  • “So it is now easier for Nigerian students to remain after their studies; they can stay I think up to two years if you have done a master’s or a Ph.D., which will enable people to look for work after they have studied.
  •  “We have a labour shortage in the UK at the moment. But we have to balance that because we do not also want to be responsible for a massive brain drain from Nigeria because you also need talented people.
  • “So the health sector is an example where there are a lot of Nigerian medics, both nurses and doctors in the National Health Service.’’

I will be shocked if the Nigerian FG claims not to have these information already. There is knowledge and the will to make things happen in your fahour. Both are separate conversations the Nigerian FG is not ready to have.

Nigeria Government do not need to

lobby UK to stop accepting Nigerians who wish to go there either for greener pasture health or for educational reasons. Why?Because they, the Government officials also go for health ,holiday or even for the education of their children. An adage says that ” as you make your bed,so you will lie on it”.Our Government officials cannot just continue to siphon our wealth and common patrimony to foreign banks instead of deploying them for developing and industrializing our country and yet get disturbed and annoyed when our hungry and jobless citizen out of frustration opt to consider other well meaning countries for jobs and other good things necessary for lives sustenance.Afterall, freedom of movement is a fundamental right of every human being going by international law.To me the trend should even be welcomed to a sort to serve as a wake up action for our corrupt,self-centered leaders who are bent on exploiting the masses even up to death.

It’s so unfortunate that the masses are in-between governments that are having a romantic symbiotic relation that aims at fostering White collar slavery in the name of greener pasture. Nigerian government frustrates talented young families forcing them out to the UK.. the UK makes money from a country it colonised through the English test…UK should be ashamed of herself. Did the BHC communicate to the NA through an interpreter. They are just cashing out and having fun about it. A little while and all their looting will be over. Bob marley preached and sang and spoke against their slavery and the chaos th.ey like to sew amongst we the people. It’s a matter of time. Someone, must fall fir another to rise, an empire must give way for another to rise too. Sooner or later the British empire will fall flat.

“UK approves Covid-19 vaccines administered in Nigeria, simplifies travel rules for Nigeria”
I saw the above article and it dawned on me that one of the main reasons UK is being flexible on visas for Nigerians (Africans), is so that they can continue to ‘sell’ Covid to us. It is evident that UK is not faring well back home. Things are really bad over there.
