Nigerian highlife music legend, Sir Victor Uwaifo has passed away at the age of 80 according to reports from family members.
Reports say the Joromi crooner passed away on Saturday, after a brief illness.
Born in Edo State, Nigeria in 1941, he won the first Golden record in Nigeria, West Africa and Africa for his song “Joromi.”
Uwaifo formed the band that produced Joromi, the highlife hit song for which he is best known, the Melody Maestros band in 1965. He briefly played with Olaiya‘s All Stars band and worked with other highlife giants like Stephen Osadebe and Fred Coker.
In 1983, he was honoured with the National Honors Merit (Member of the Order of the Niger), for his contribution to art in Nigeria.
