The Federal House of Representatives has passed a resolution to investigate the legality or otherwise, of the Federal Government’s decision to suspend Twitter in the country.
The members of the lower house have also resolved to invite the Minister of Culture and Information, Lai Mohammed as part of its investigation.
This disclosure was made by the Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, while addressing his colleagues on resumption of plenary on Tuesday after 2 weeks break, directing the House Committees on Justice, Commerce, and Information to investigate the process that led to the suspension of the platform.
The Speaker said that while the House recognizes that Twitter is a very important means of communication and business for the younger generation of Nigerians, the government has a responsibility to ensure it is not used to undermine national security.
Gbajabiamila said the microblogging site has been used for both good and bad and the legislature must make sure that the policies of government are in accordance with the law and do not have adverse consequences on the people.
