Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Linkedin

A Green City worth $4.5 billion is set to be launched in Rwanda. The city, which will be the first in Africa, is expected to be built next year, according to Weetracker.

The Details: The Green City is a future projection of the next generation of African cities and is expected to utilise renewable energy, green buildings and eco-friendly designs for its construction masterplan and overall outlook.

The Green City project, being one of the first in Africa, is expected to be surrounded by environmentally-friendly facilities alone. There would not be any sign of combustion in the area, only green-friendly projects like environmentally-friendly mini-factories and fully electric vehicles would be available for people who desire to live there.

Rwanda set to launch first-of-its-kind Green City worth $4.5 billion

Location: The city has been sited on a land area of about 620 hectares in Kinyinya, Gasabo District, in Kigali. This Green City is coming after the launch of first Made-in-Africa smartphones and electric cars in the past couple of months.

Job creation: Green City is designed to serve 150,000 people. As a result of this, 30,000 housing units, which would create nothing less than 16,000 jobs, would be developed. In fact, no one would have to be ejected for the project to commence.

Funding: As regards funding, feasibility studies have begun. Partners like Rwanda Green Fund, KfW Development Bank, and the German Development Cooperation have been identified as potential sponsors.

Speaking about the project, Deputy Team Leader of the Green City Pilot, Eudes Kayumba, noted that the city would deal solely with clean technology which includes electric vehicles, renewable energy, sustainable waste treatment, biogas plants, and urban forests. He also promised that the city would not suffer any form of air pollution or environmental degradation.

What you should know: Non-biodegradable plastics have been banned in Rwanda and the country has a monthly day of community cleaning service, at present. In 2016, Rwanda introduced car-free days. Earlier this year, it unveiled car-free zones to curb air pollution.

In 2019, Kigali was named Public Health Laureate in the Wellbeing City Awards by NewCities, a global non-profit committed to shaping a better urban future.
