In response to negative reactions trailing its decision to restrict customers from using their ATM cards for several transactions, UBA (United Bank of Africa) has made a major reversal. In an email sent to the media by Chukwuma Nweke, the bank’s Executive Director, Group COO, it apologized for the action and said customers can freely use their cards on any platform.
The bank would however continue to monitor high risk websites to prevent unauthorized access to customer funds.
We have listened to you and have heard that this is not in line with your expectations. We have immediately made adjustments accordingly. Please be informed that all sites have been unblocked and you can now transact on any platform globally that you would like to whilst we continue to provide surveillance on some high risk activity points to protect your transactions. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and will continue to work hard to serve you better.
The bank had earlier this week issued a notice restricting customers from using their debit card to transact in select products and services, including jewellery, escort services and betting. The decision was hugely criticised by most of its customers and may have forced the bank into changing course. Nigeria has a thriving betting industry as most Nigerians, especially the youth, turn to betting to make extra income, especially as we just entered a new European football season.
UBA topped Nairametrics list of banks that made the most money from E-business transactions in 2016.
