5 Nigerian Banking mobile apps you need to own
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Linkedin

The era of having to visit banks and experience long queues to get simple transactions done is gradually over. With practically every bank having its own mobile application, especially for smartphone users, it is almost becoming a ‘crime’ to visit the banking halls for simple transfers. However, as with all things, creativity and skill come into the way these apps are developed. Therefore, even though all banking apps carry out basic functions, some remain the best of the crop.

These are 5 mobile banking apps that fit that bill in no particular order are as follows;

First Mobile: The official banking app of First Bank of Nigeria is really it. From its beautiful Graphic User Interface (GUI) to the range of services available on the app, First Mobile works with so much convenience that puts apps of many new generation banks to shame. A particularly appealing feature are the 54 bill categories you can pay on the app. The diversity is also widespread, from betting and lottery to State and Ministry payments. Registration is also a stroll in the park as all you need are your debit card number and 5-digit pin. You can also transact as much as N1 million daily on the app. Downside to the app is the delayed introduction of bio-metric scanning. First Mobile has about 1 million downloads on the Android Play store. It currently has a 4.2-star rating, which is one of the best in the industry. It was rated by about 9,335 people and has reviews by 214 of its users in the Play Store.

GT World – The recently released smart phone app of the Guaranty Trust Bank is another innovative. The main attraction is the introduction of the bio-metric security feature, which considering the latest trend of smartphones, will soon become a must-have. With this bio-metric feature, customers can carry out certain transactions without signing in, using their fingerprint or facial recognition for authentication. It also offers the option of switching to GAPS Lite, an online banking platform for small businesses which offers a flexible and secure channel to make payments and collections anywhere in the world. Boasting of a wide array of bills that can be paid using the app as well as smooth performance, GT World is a necessity, not a convenience for GTB clients. GT World is still a relatively new app and had just 50,000 downloads in the Play Store. The old GT Bank app still has about 1 million downloads. It also has a 4.1-star rating.

UBA Mobile banking –  Recently revamped, United Bank of Africa upgraded its mobile banking app, stocking with features compliant with the latest technology. As with GT World, the mobile app which comes with the biometric log-in feature for secure and personalized access. It also boasts of ATM/branch locator for easy access to the bank’s touch-points, easier airtime top up via direct selection of contacts from the phone address book and auto reminder for bill payments and recurrent transfers. Will probably boast of top place in the ease-of-use category. It however allows for transactions of up to N200, 000 only, which poses a slight limitation to business users. The app has about 500k downloads in the Google Play Store and has a 3.8-star rating and rated by 3,927 users.

Access Bank – With all the basic features and more, the mobile app of Access Bank is another app with an eye-catching GUI. The app however does not have its own unique name (at least in the app store). What is different though is the wide array of platforms on which the app is available. While most other mobile banking apps are available on the iPhone, Android, Blackberry platforms, the Access Bank app is also available on Java-enabled phones. With the app available in both Classic and Premium editions, the N2 million daily transaction limit should be sufficient for the average user. This app has a 4.2-star rating with about 104 reviews and counting in the play store. The app has been rated by about 5,132 people as at the time of penning this article. The app has been downloaded 500k times.

Diamond Mobile –  Diamond Bank’s mobile app is another top quality mobile application that boasts of several innovative features. The snap overview of transactions available in the ‘Trends’ section of the app which using bar charts summarizes income and expenditure levels for the past 3 months is an example. With the new eSUSU Savings plan also available on the app. Diamond Bank app main drawback is its default N100,000 daily limit, which can however be adjusted. The app has about 1 million downloads and has been reviewed 197 times by its users. It has a 4.1-star rating and has been rated by a whopping 11,326 people.
