Nigerian looking to secure prepaid or postpaid meters may have to wait a little longer as local meter manufacturers have said that they can produce at least 25,000 meters monthly for a start.
The Punch reports that The Electricity Meters Manufacturers Association of Nigeria “said they will produce at least 25,000 meters monthly for a start, with a plan to increase production gradually to meet the country’s metering need and for ease of deployment.”
With the metering gap in Nigeria estimated at over 2 million customers, it will take years before every electricity consumer in Nigeria is metered if we were to rely solely on local manufacturers. Local Discos have been often accused of relying on foreign meter manufacturers to close the metering gap. Unfortunately, that too has become a problem as inability to access forex has severely impacted the ability of Discos to import meters.
