As we enter the harmattan, Nigeria’s heat isn’t letting up.

And with power supply still far from reliable, more people are turning to energy-efficient air conditioners to stay cool without breaking the bank.

From homes to offices and even roadside shops, the demand for affordable yet durable cooling units has never been higher.

In this race to beat the heat, Chinese brands have taken center stage. Names like Midea, Hisense, Gree, TCL, Chigo, and Kenstar have become go-to options for many Nigerians, thanks to their balance of price, performance, and after-sales support.

To find out which models are winning hearts (and wallets), Nairametrics spoke with electronics dealers and retailers across Abuja. Here’s a look at some of the most popular Chinese-made air conditioners in Nigeria — ranked by price and availability.

  • 6. TCL N516,000 – N1,900,000
  • 5. Kenstar N500,000 – N1,320,000
  • 4. Gree – N500,000

  • 2. Hisense – N290,000 – N350,000

The manufacturer and sole distributor of Gree air conditioners in Nigeria is Choice International Group (CIG), operating through its subsidiary, Gree Air Conditioner Nigeria. CIG maintains a long-standing partnership with Gree Electric Appliances, Inc., a global leader in air conditioning technology, to deliver Gree’s high-quality and energy-efficient products to the Nigerian market.

According to Gree website, “over 300 million worldwide users, one in three air-conditioning systems produced in the world is manufactured by Gree.”

Some of the product’s variants include:

  • Gree Bee Series Split Air Conditioner
  • Gree Viola Series Air Conditioner
  • Gree Silent King Series Split Air Conditioner

These models cater to different consumer needs — from energy efficiency to ultra-quiet operation.

Key features of Gree air conditioners include:

  •  Auto Restart: Automatically restores previous settings after a power outage, ensuring uninterrupted comfort.
  • Copper Tube (Condenser & Evaporator): Enhances durability and heat transfer efficiency for a longer lifespan and better performance.
  • Self-Diagnosis: Built-in system detects and displays error codes for easy troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Healthy Filters: Equipped with multi-layer filters that trap dust, allergens, and bacteria, ensuring cleaner indoor air.
  • Rapid Cooling: Delivers fast and powerful cooling, ideal for Nigeria’s tropical temperatures.
  • Quiet Operation: Designed for silent performance, making it suitable for bedrooms and office environments.
  • Low Voltage Startup: Enables the AC to start and function effectively even when the power supply is low — perfect for areas with unstable electricity.

What distributors say:

According to some retailers, many customers prefer the product because of their longevity, strong cooling capacity, and resistance to power fluctuations — an essential feature in a country where voltage instability is common.

  • Some buyers complain that distributors are reluctant to honor full warranty coverage, especially for “user-related” damage.

Cost: A popular variant, the Gree 1HP Split Air Conditioner, currently retails for about N512,000 in major electronics stores.
