As we enter the harmattan, Nigeria’s heat isn’t letting up.

And with power supply still far from reliable, more people are turning to energy-efficient air conditioners to stay cool without breaking the bank.

From homes to offices and even roadside shops, the demand for affordable yet durable cooling units has never been higher.

In this race to beat the heat, Chinese brands have taken center stage. Names like Midea, Hisense, Gree, TCL, Chigo, and Kenstar have become go-to options for many Nigerians, thanks to their balance of price, performance, and after-sales support.

To find out which models are winning hearts (and wallets), Nairametrics spoke with electronics dealers and retailers across Abuja. Here’s a look at some of the most popular Chinese-made air conditioners in Nigeria — ranked by price and availability.

2. Hisense – N290,000 – N350,000

  • 6. TCL N516,000 – N1,900,000
  • 5. Kenstar N500,000 – N1,320,000
  • 4. Gree – N500,000
  • 3. Midea N390,000 – N450,000
  • 2. Hisense – N290,000 – N350,000
  • 1. Chigo – N235,000 – N250,000

Hisense is produced by the Hisense Group, a Chinese multinational electronics and home appliance manufacturer headquartered in Qingdao, China. The state-owned company is known globally for its wide range of consumer electronics and also holds the rights to sell Sharp TVs in North and Central America, in addition to owning a stake in Toshiba’s TV unit.

In Nigeria, Fouani Nigeria Ltd serves as the sole distributor of Hisense products, including air conditioners. Other authorized retailers include Alabamart, Elins Nigeria, Electromart Nigeria, and Mitos Shoppers, ensuring wide accessibility of Hisense products across the country.

Key Features of Hisense Air Conditioners

  • AI Smart Technology

According to Hisense’s website, its air conditioners are equipped with AI Smart Eye Technology that can detect a person’s position in a room and intelligently adjust temperature, humidity, airflow direction, and speed to provide maximum comfort.

  • HI-NANO Air Purification

The HI-NANO feature releases a double ion group that kills and removes bacteria and viruses from circulating indoor air. It effectively eliminates airborne dust, viruses, and bacteria—reducing up to 60.07% of PM2.5, 92.6% of H1N1, and 88.5% of E. coli within two hours—creating a cleaner and healthier environment.

  • Dual Self-Clean Technology

Hisense’s patented Dual Self-Clean system cleans both the indoor and outdoor units automatically. It removes dust and dirt buildup, ensuring a deeper clean and delivering a healthier air supply.

  • Turbo Operation

The Turbo Operation mode provides rapid cooling or heating. When activated, the system maximizes output to quickly reach the desired temperature—ideal for fast comfort during hot afternoons or cool nights.

  • LED Front Display

An elegant LED display on the front panel shows the current temperature, mode, fan speed, and timer settings—allowing easy monitoring and adjustments.

  • Self-Cleaning Function

In addition to Dual Self-Clean, Hisense air conditioners include a self-cleaning process that dries the evaporator to prevent mould, bacteria, and odour buildup—maintaining consistent air quality over time.

  • Super Distance Remote Control

The super distance remote allows convenient control from farther away or at wide angles within the room, offering flexibility and ease of use.

  • Tropical Compressor

Hisense uses a tropical compressor designed for high-performance cooling in extreme heat—up to 60°C. This makes it particularly suitable for Nigeria’s tropical climate, ensuring reliability even during power fluctuations.

  • Jet Cool Function

The Jet Cool feature blasts strong, cool air at high speed for up to 30 minutes, quickly reducing room temperature to as low as 18°C—providing immediate relief during intense heat.

  • Anti-Corrosion Protection

The outdoor unit’s heat exchanger is coated with gold anti-corrosion epoxy to prevent rust and maintain optimal heat transfer efficiency over time, especially in coastal or humid environments.

  • Low Voltage Stability (LVS)

What distributors say:

According to some retailers, Hisense air conditioners are built with Low Voltage Stability (LVS) technology, ensuring steady performance even in areas with unstable power supply—a common challenge in many parts of Nigeria.

They also noted the product is highly energy efficient and offers dependable cooling and comfort tailored to the Nigerian environment.

Distributors also said Hisense air conditioners are often preferred by many customers because of their affordability, durability, and the easy availability of spare parts.

  • Customers report that the self-cleaning mode doesn’t prevent mould buildup in humid areas.

A popular model — the Hisense 1HP Copper Coil Split Air Conditioner (AS09TG) — currently retails between N290,000 and N350,000 in leading stores.
