Trump eyes premium $1,000 US visa interview slot for faster B1/B2 access

The Donald Trump administration is considering a proposal that would allow foreign nationals to pay a $1,000 premium fee to expedite their US B1/B2 visa interview appointments.

If implemented, the plan could significantly speed up the visa scheduling process for international travellers seeking to visit the United States, potentially transforming the experience for those who can afford the fast-track option.

A memo dated May 17 from the Trump campaign outlines a proposal to introduce a “premium appointment” system for US B1/B2 visa applicants covering short-term business (B1) and tourism (B2) travel.

Under the proposed system, applicants could pay an additional $1,000 on top of the current $185 non-refundable application fee to gain priority access to earlier visa interview slots.

The plan, however, would not alter existing visa eligibility criteria or documentation requirements. It would solely offer faster scheduling for those willing to pay the premium.

Long wait times prompt proposal

US visa interview wait times in many countries can extend for several months or even over a year, posing significant challenges for travelers with urgent needs.

According to the memo, the proposed $1,000 fast-track appointment system is aimed at addressing these delays by:

  • Improving customer service at US consulates
  • Generating additional revenue for the US Department of State
  • Easing mounting backlogs for time-sensitive travelers

However, the plan would not affect standard wait times for applicants who choose not to pay the premium fee.

Status of the proposal

As of now, the proposed $1,000 fast-track US visa appointment system remains under consideration and has not been implemented.

A spokesperson for the US State Department declined to comment on internal planning or draft proposals.

The idea is currently being explored by Trump’s policy advisers as part of a broader package of immigration and visa reforms ahead of the 2024 US presidential election.

Debate over equity and access

While the proposed $1,000 fast-track visa interview option could be a game-changer for business travelers and tourists with urgent timelines, it has sparked debate over fairness and access.

  • Supporters argue the system could significantly reduce wait times for those willing and able to pay, while also generating additional revenue to support US consular operations.
  • However, critics warn it may deepen existing inequalities in visa access, especially for applicants from lower-income countries.

Travel experts caution that the proposal risks creating a two-tiered visa process—one that moves faster for the wealthy and slower for everyone else.

Travelers urged to follow current procedures

Since the fast-track visa appointment proposal has not been finalized or enacted, travelers are advised to continue following the existing US visa application process. This includes:

  • Booking visa appointments well in advance
  • Preparing all required documentation
  • Monitoring updates from the US State Department’s official visa website
