Top 11 states with the highest fares for bus journeys within cities in April 2024

The average fare for bus journeys within Nigerian cities per drop rose by 49.32%, reaching N967.76 in April 2024, compared to N648.12 in April 2023.

This data is from the recently released National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Transport Fare Watch for April 2024.

The report also indicated that, on a month-on-month basis, the April 2024 average fare of N967.76 was 0.16% lower than the N969.32 commuters paid in March 2024.

The analysis by zone revealed that bus journey fares within cities were highest in the South West at N988.33, followed by the South-South at N984.50.

The South East recorded the lowest fare at N926.00. In this article, Nairametrics explores the top 11 states with the highest fares for bus journeys within cities in April 2024.

10/11. Abuja and Zamfara

The eleventh spot on the list of the top 11 states with the highest fares for bus journeys within cities in April 2024 is shared between the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and Zamfara State, with commuters paying an average of N1,080 per drop.

  • The fare in Abuja is approximately 13.00% higher than the North Central zone’s average of N955.71 in the same period.
  • For Zamfara State in the North West zone, this fare is approximately 11.99% higher than the zone’s average of N964.29.

9. Anambra State

Anambra State occupies the ninth spot on the list of the top 11 states with the highest fares for bus journeys within cities in April 2024, with commuters paying an average of N1,090 per trip.

  • Located in the South East zone, this fare is approximately 17.71% higher than the zone’s average of N926.00 in April 2024.

6/7/8. Bauchi, Kaduna, and Rivers States

The sixth spot on the top 11 states with the highest fares for bus journeys within cities in April 2024 is shared between Bauchi, Kaduna, and Rivers States, with commuters paying an average of N1,100 per drop.

  • For Bauchi in the North East zone, this fare is approximately 11.86% higher than the zone’s average of N983.33 in the same period.
  • For Rivers State in the South-South zone, this fare is approximately 11.73% higher than the zone’s average of N984.50 in April 2024.
  • For Kaduna State in the North West zone, this fare is approximately 14.07% higher than the zone’s average of N964.29 in April 2024.

5. Jigawa State

The fifth spot on the top 11 states with the highest fares for bus journeys within cities in April 2024 is Jigawa State, with commuters paying an average of N1,120 per drop.

  • Located in the North West zone, the fare is approximately 16.15% higher than the zone’s average of N964.29 in April 2024.

3/4. Imo and Lagos States

The third position on the top 11 states with the highest fares for bus journeys within cities in April 2024 is jointly shared by Imo and Lagos States, with commuters paying an average of N1,150 per drop.

  • For Imo State in the South East zone, this fare is approximately 24.19% higher than the zone’s average of N926.00 for the same period.
  • For Lagos in the South West zone, this fare is approximately 16.36% higher than the zone’s average fare of N988.33 for April 2024.

2. Ondo State

Ondo State occupies the second spot on the top 11 states with the highest fares for bus journeys within cities in April 2024, with commuters paying an average of N1,200 per drop.

  • Compared with the South West zone’s average fare of bus journeys within cities of N988.33 for April 2024, this fare is 21.45% higher.

Taraba State takes the top spot on the list of the top 11 states with the highest fares for bus journeys within cities in April 2024, with commuters paying an average of N1,450 per drop.

  • Located in the North East, this fare is approximately 47.47% higher than the zone’s average of N983.33 for April 2024.
