Top 10 states with highest domestic airfares in Nigeria in April 2024

The average fare for domestic air transportation in Nigeria for specified routes rose by 19%, reaching N89,189.19 in April 2024 from N74,947.30 in April 2023.  

This data comes from the recently released National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Transport Fare Watch for April 2024. 

The report also indicated that, on a month-on-month basis, the April 2024 average fare of N89,189.19 was 0.25% higher than the N88,964.86 paid by the flying public in March 2024.

The analysis by zone revealed that domestic air transportation fares in April 2024 were highest in the North West at N92,128.57, followed by the South West at N92,033.33, while the North-Central had the lowest fares at N84,571. 

In this article, Nairametrics explores the top 10 states with the highest fares for domestic air transportation in April 2024. 

Here are the top 10 states with the highest domestic airfares in Nigeria in April 2024:  

8/9/10. Kaduna, Kwara, and Taraba States 

The eighth position on the top 10 states with the highest fares for domestic air transportation for specified routes in April 2024 is shared between Kaduna, Kwara, and Taraba States, with passengers paying an average of N93,000 for a single trip. 

  • For Kwara and Kaduna States in the North Central zone, this fare is approximately 9.97% higher than the zone’s average of N84,571.43 in April 2024.  
  • For Taraba State located in the North East zone, this fare is approximately 3.64% higher than the zone’s average of N89,733.33 for the same period. 

6/7. Borno and Oyo States 

The sixth spot on the list of top 10 states with the highest fares for domestic air transportation for specified routes in April 2024 is jointly occupied by Borno and Oyo States, with passengers paying an average of N94,000 for a single trip. 

  • For Borno State in the North East zone, this fare is approximately 4.76% higher than the zone’s average domestic airfare of N89,733.33 for the same period.  
  • For Oyo State in the South West zone, this fare of N94,000 is approximately 2.14% higher than the zone’s average of N92,033.33 for April 2024. 
  1. Kebbi State

In the fifth spot on the list of top 10 states with the highest fares for domestic air transportation for specified routes in April 2024 is Kebbi State, with passengers paying an average of N94,500. Located in the North West zone, this fare is approximately 2.57% higher than the zone’s average of N92,128.57 for the same period. 

3/4. Enugu and Rivers States 

Enugu and Rivers States jointly occupy the third position among the top 10 states with the highest fares for domestic air transportation for specified routes in April 2024, with passengers paying an average of N95,000.  

  • For Enugu State in the South East zone, this fare is approximately 9.58% higher than the zone’s average of N86,700 for the same period.  
  • For Rivers State in the South South zone, this fare is approximately 5.75% higher than the zone’s average fare of N89,833.33 in April 2024. 
  1. Ogun State

Ogun State occupies the second spot on the list of the top 10 states with the highest fares for domestic air transportation for specified routes in April 2024, with passengers paying an average of N95,500 per trip.  

  • Located in the South West zone, the fare is approximately 3.77% higher than the zone’s average of N92,033.33 in the same period. 
  1. Kano State

Kano State holds the first spot among the top 10 states with the highest fares for domestic air transportation for specified routes in April 2024, with passengers paying an average of N96,500 per trip.  

  • Located in the North West zone, this fare is approximately 4.75% higher than the zone’s average of N92,128.57 in the same period.
