The Federal government has disclosed that pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) are included as beneficiaries in the recently approved N25,000 conditional cash transfer as a part of measures to curtail the effects of the fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians.

The decision was revealed in a statement by the Corporate Communications unit of the Pension Transitional Administration Directorate (PTAD) where it provided clarity on the CCT program to pensioners.

PTAD noted in its statement that the decision to include pensioners in the cash transfer program was a sequel to a meeting between PTAD, Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), pension union executives and pension desk officers of PTAD’s pension department earlier in October.

The statement reads,

  • “The Pension Transitional Administration Directorate (PTAD) and the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) during an interactive session with stakeholders including the Nigeria Pension Commission (PenCom), Pension Union Executives and Pension desk officers of the parastatals pension department on Wednesday October 18, 2023 clarified that pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) are part of the priority groups to benefit from the just approved N25,000 Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT).”

Data of pensioners already with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs

The Director of the Civil Service Pension Department (CSPD), Mr Sulayman said that PTAD in partnership with the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has captured and verified the data of all DBS pensioners and submitted it to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

It stated,

  • “He further explained that PTAD in collaboration with the NUP made sure that the data of all DBS pensioners who have been verified and are on the payroll has been promptly submitted to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation through the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP).”

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs will handle the transfer of the funds to the pensioners.

About the CCT

Earlier in October, the federal government launched the conditional cash transfer program targeted at 15 million Nigerians. The program aims to pay N25,000 to 15 million economically vulnerable Nigerians for three months.

From all indications, PTAD have always been proactive and committed to ensuring the welfare of DBS pensioners whereas PENCOM is always indifferent to the plight of CPS pensioners.

Today PTAD is ensuring that DBS pensions benefit from conditional cash transfer, just like they have ensured the payment of all approved pension increases to DBS retiree’s, a feat that PENCOM has not been able to accomplish.

The federal government should create another office like PTAD which will definitely cater for the welfare of public CPS retiree’s than PENCOM

You are very correct. Pencom is not living up to expectations. Pensioners under PTAD get increments whenever FG increases workers pay. This I think is because Armed personnels are involved. NUP must therefore be strengthened to fight the cause of CPS pensioners.

Does it mean that pensioners under CPS are not benefiting from the scheme? This needs urgent clarification please.

I don’t get it, are you saying those retirees under the CPS but not in the NUP will not benefit? Please clarify. As a Retiree how under the CPS how do one get his/her data captured for the N25,000 palliative.

Have you heard PENCOM saying anything about CPS retiree’s benefiting from conditional cash transfer like PTAD has openly declared that DBS pensioners will
      benefit from from CCT?
It is very obvious that PENCOM has not been taken the welfare of CPS retiree’s seriously like PTAD is doing for DBS pensioners..

Govt. Should include Pensioners under PENCOM or Advise PENCOM to Increase Pensioners stipends to alleviate the present hardship.
