The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has granted approval for an upward adjustment in the prices of prepaid electricity meters within the nation, according to the Daily Trust.

According to a circular dated September 5, 2023, signed by the Chairman, Sanusi Garba, and the Commissioner of Legal, Licensing, and Compliance, Dafe Akpeneye, the commission has announced revised prices for prepaid meters.

A single-phase prepaid meter will now be priced at N81,975.16k, up from the previous N58,661.69k, while the cost of a three-phase prepaid meter has been raised to N143,836.10k from the previous N109,684.36k.

As detailed in the circular, the motivation behind the price adjustment was to create an equitable and sensible meter pricing system that would be fair to both Meter Asset Providers (MAPs) and end-user customers.

The circular highlights the following,

  • “Ensure MAP’s ability to recover reasonable costs associated with meter procurement and maintenance while ensuring that their pricing structure allows for a viable return on investment.
  • “Evaluate the affordability of meter services for consumers, aiming to prevent excessive pricing that could burden end-users.
  • Ensure that MAPs are able to provide meters to end-use customers in the prevailing economic realities.”

Why do we need to buy the meter when you already have an old one which means you are buying twice?
    Is this right!!!!!!!

Do they care about the economic reality of Nigerians?

IT IS GROSS INJUSTICE FOR ENERGY CONSUMERS TO PAY FOR METRE & YOU’RE NEITHER REFUNDED NOR CREDITED WITH ENERGY ⚡ UNITS FOR MONIES PAID TO PURCHASE A METRE, THE DISCOs WERE SUPPOSED TO PROVIDE FOR YOU.

    # WHAT KIND OF INJUSTICE TO NIGERIANS IS THIS?

Why is Nigerian head of Organisations always happy at making life difficult for every abiding citizens on all grounds?
The Metets bought some years back are no more useable. Now we have to pay a 300% increase in the cost of meter while wages level has been static for over 10 years.

The truth is will increase in cost guarantee availability? At N81,000+, there will still be no meter unless the buyer is ready to pay bribes..What a complex country we live. Government installed below quality meters for citizens, which they later requested them.to.come and change at exorbitant prices. The idea of local production was sold to us perhaps it would make easier for us and create jobs, however the issues around affordable meters will not be realized. Perhaps banks can implement meter funding programmes. May be, the hiccups in the process would go if the banks become an intermediary..

In the first place, DisCos’ customers are not bound to pay for electricity meter since the cost is being embedded in the tariff which makes it the responsibility of the service providers to provide meters to their customers. Secondly, it was in one of NERC Orders that payment for meters by customers must be refunded to such customers by the service providers which the service providers failed to comply with, this Order including installmental payment for meters could have been enforced before increasing meter price and tariff
The failure of NERC to monitor and enforce it’s orders that benefit DisCos, customers is showing that the Commission has been captured by the Service Providers ( Agency Capture) this means that the Regulatory Commission dances to the drum beats of the service providers

Nigerians be ready for the worst. You can imagine government increasing the prices of everything and not increasing the income of her citizens. They are agents of the west, working hard to depopulate Nigeria through excruciating hardship..

May God open our eyes and help us to arise to defend our lives and stop these wicked oppressors.

Everything is rigged against the average Nigeria. Meter is a property of the Discos. Instead of NERC to ensure these meters are delivered to the consumers, they are approving rate for purchase. When you damage it, it becomes Disco property and you will be charged for damage or tsmper. NAIJA we hail thee.

They are bunch of thieves. Infact this kinda make the federal government looks like there is no control, no effective leadership where anything goes. What a headless leadership as insinuated by the behavior of the electric distribution companies

This NERC is nothing different from NNPC which arbitrarily increases prices of essential facilities meant for use of common man without looking at the existing economic reality on ground. I think state government should come on board to set up their distribution agencies and start selling their own prepaid meters.
