Staff of the Office of the Auditor-General bags 7 years in prison for defrauding job seekers of N14million

A Sokoto State High court has sentenced Abdullahi Paiko Aliyu, a staff of the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation, to 7 years imprisonment.

Justice Mohammed Mohammed sentenced Mr Paiko on Tuesday after finding him guilty of a two-count charge bordering on obtaining by false pretenses of over N14 million.

He was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Following his arraignment, he pleaded guilty to the charges proffered against him.

What the EFCC is saying

According to EFCC, the convict had defrauded unsuspecting members of the public under the guise of securing them employment in federal agencies.

Some of the agencies he promised to help the victims secure jobs include: the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) National Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Nigerian Maritime and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

Delivering judgement on the matter, Justice Mohammed sentenced Mr Paiko to 7 years in prison.

He ordered Mr Paiko to make full restitution of the said amount of N14, 300, 000 to victims of the crime through the EFCC.

  • Nairametrics had earlier reported how a 33-year-old civil servant was arraigned last month for allegedly defrauding 15 job seekers of N3.2million.
  • He had promised to secure jobs for 15 job seekers after claiming to be an agent for the State Internal Revenue Service. He was charged to court for fraud following a report at the State Criminal and Investigative Department via a letter of complaint on March 20.
  • Nairametrics had also reported how an American allegedly defrauded two Nigerians of $368,698 under the pretext of procuring them green cards. The Nigerians had invested the money in the American’s company which he said qualifies their eligibility for issuance of U.S green cards which turned out to be a scam.
  • We also reported how a forex trader who stole N20 million cryptocurrency was sentenced to two years in prison by an Ikeja Special Offences Court. He was convicted after finding him guilty of three of the charges proffered against him by the EFCC.
