Kuda Bank has responded to the viral video of a customer being dragged out of its office by armed police officers.
The video, which was published on Twitter showed a Kuda client being dragged while lying flat on the floor, and has since sparked outrage among Nigerians.
The bank has today responded in a statement revealing the details of what occurred at its office, leading to policemen dragging the customer in the now-viral video.
What happened?
It said the unfortunate scenario occurred as a result of the Kuda Fraud Team placing a freeze on the consumer’s account.
It all started with a message from Kuda Bank informing the customer that it was conducting a review on his account after several efforts to reach him.
“Hi Abdulqudus, We tried reaching you on your mobile line but efforts have been futile, please be informed that we are conducting a review with regards to the recent transactions made on your account to enable us better understand and profile your account appropriately,” Kuda’s message read.
Kuda added, “Please let us know the source and purpose of the inflow.”
However, in the course of clarifying the account freeze, it seems things went a little out of hand.
The victim’s brother @Ayam_Jamotech took to his Twitter to explain the event. He said, “So my brother went to @kudabankhelp office today at Yaba to know the reason why his account was locked and yet not to be opened after dropping his proof to them that it’s legit money and not fraud money at all. So funny how when he got there this morning. They sent their mopol.”
The allegations were confirmed when a video surfaced showing the victim being manhandled by the armed police officer.
Kuda Bank’s response
Kuda MFB gave an official statement about the worrisome situation in their offices.
- The statement partly reads, “It has come to our attention that a couple of videos are being circulated online regarding the experience of one of our customers yesterday. The videos show the customer being forcefully escorted off our premises by members of the Nigerian Police Force. We wish to unequivocally state that Kuda Microfinance Bank Limited (“Kuda MFB”) does not condone or support such violence in any manner, particularly against its customers.”
- The Bank said that its actions regarding account closure are meant to conform to existing laws put down by the apex bank. It said, “as a financial institution licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria, we have an obligation to comply with the mandates of all applicable government and law enforcement agencies, supported by the appropriate documentation.”
- However, the Bank said that the manhandling of the consumer was because the customer failed to cooperate with the law enforcement agencies during their investigation of the alleged criminal activity on the customer’s account.
- The Bank added that no staff of the Kuda MFB was involved in the unfortunate incident that was captured in the video.
I don’t know what people are looking in all these small micro finance banks. They bring a whole lot of problems and embarrassment to customers most of the time. There are a whole lots of first tier bank you can have an account with, that will definitely give you peace of mind rather than bank with tiny Banksthat gives problems and hassles. A good lesson to learn from
This Micro Finance Banks are doing great work in the banking industry today. They come in and made things easier. I support Kuda and its likes. Let’s all abide by the rules to avoid self embarrassment
You be mumu
Real mumu.
I’ve given up on you.
👏👏
they already concluded he was carrying out criminal activities with the account even when the brother stated that all documents wer provided to clearify any of such notion!!!
They have NOT “concluded” anything. There are AML laws and regulations that require banks to freeze and verify certain transactions. Merely providing documents is NOT “proof” (regardless of what his brother says) until the authenticity and/or validity of such documents are ascertained.
Just listen to yourself Mr supporter. Until the stones touches you or a loved one among you family before you judge right. #NoToUnfairManHandling
I agree with you. KudaMFB has been nothing but a great bank, I’ve had lots of great experiences with the bank since I opened an account with them. Kuda is doing wonderfully well, things like this is expected, since nobody expected the bank gain these much grounds, the bank has liberated me from first tier banks headaches of failed transactions. With Kuda, reversal of failed transactions are almost immediate.
Ode dey do advert.
Because you are one of their staff why won’t you defend them
Useless people
Wtf are you saying man, almost all Nigerian banks give problems, be it Zenith, First or GT Banks, all of them are problematic. The scandal that happened at kuda can happen in any other bank, the main problem is just this stupid country.
Fk Kuda and it’s useless team
What they are doing is good. Many people have been duped by d so called customers. I lost much and no body want to hear me out. I hv d account number and the phone number. Honestly they want to destroy the bank. Fish them out and punish them. My fear is that they must have moved d money to another bank
This bank just drove customers away, people now will be sceptical about doing business with this bank.
even if the customer fail to cooperate with the police he has nothing to do with the police if kuda is investigating their customer police has nothing to do with that so kuda should find a way to apologise to that customer so that it won’t look as something else ie police is not efcc I urge kuda to treat this issue with care so that it will not escalate it will not look as kuda join with police to deal with their customer thanks
Police manhandling a loyal Kuda MFB customer, account freezing and torture without a proper legal process, no court order nor a police report. Too bad.
There was a court order
Please where did you see the court order??
Don’t mind him… Bird of the same feather.
Fk them both. (The working MENTAL people)
Court order within how many minutes or hour, take time we’re not your mate here. Kuda should better apologize now or face the negativity that comes with it, we’ll all close our account there.
Answer Olabode naw!
This is just a self exonerating statement by the bank, how do you explain a customer coming to your bank to clear himself only to be manhandled by the police for doing no wrong, kuda bank jst lost a lot of customers including myself
Kuda is doing wonder I never experience from big banks never do for their customers, free 25 transfer every month, No deduction of money anyhow from your account unlike big banks , free ATM card with free delivery etc. I beg, 3 gbosa for kuda….kuda for life
you are in darkness, have you try OPay?
kuda is learning
Thank you brotherly, you’ve said it all
Ever since I started kuda bank my life good and stress-free, I used bank with zenith but they were extorting too much from my account using different excuses and moreover they had really poor service. Kuda sometimes have issues but I like the fact that they informed their customers before hand Incase anything wants to happen, so… Yeah Kuda for life
Pray, You don’t be a victim and maybe then you understand and I hope you still be optimistic by then You ignorant black man
I have been using kuda mfb for some month now but for the customer to come to kuda office and was treated in that manner is wrong, things should be done accordingly not maltreating your loyal customer that leaves what is doing to come to your office and clear himself and later he was battered by kuda mfb MOPOL… INDECISIVE.

Seems like some people just like to move the negative direction in order to score cheap appraisals. Reasons for police officers handling the customer the way they did had been told and you still finding a way to legitimise the customers fault. I just don’t understand sha. Well birds of the same feather flocks together. I’m sure if such occurs in your office, you’ll condone it.
how come you find it so easy to believe Kuda bank and pay no mind to the Brother’s explanation noting that he went to the bank with documents to clearify that there was no fraudulent act here!!!
And the “brother” is the CBN or regulator?! LOL!
Even when supporting documents are provided wrt a suspicious account or transaction, the authenticity, veracity and validity of such documents still has to be ascertained.
How do you know if it was the customer’s fault? Or you are just towing towing the bank ‘s line blindly?
It be the customer trading bitcoin which is not a crime but a means of living in everywhere in this world that only our government rejects. Hope and pray, You don’t be a victim someday and someone telling you rubbish on your legible hard earned cash,; I guess you be cool about It Hypocrite
Nigerian banks are in business on basis of licenses issued to them by the CBN, which (among other things) require them to obey the CBN’s directives. Accordingly, if the CBN prohibits them from engaging in cryptocurrency transactions, they are duty-bound (at the risk of losing their licenses or otherwise being fined or penalized) to do so. Customers should know such elementary things.
Kuda should please keep her KYC unit updated so many fraudulent Kuda account on the rise lately. I was a victim of such accounts I reported but I do not think anything has been done. In all, I enjoy Kuda services but I’m now extra careful to deal with any client with Kuda account, that is I will not transact any business with you on Kuda.
They would do same to you one day when you are trying to defend yourself, come to talk of it is police brutality constitutionally? Can we be civilized for once in this country
If the guy is fraudulent, do you think he would have showed up at the bank premises after been sent a message by the bank to bring proof of funds?
Yes, he might. Largely because many Nigerians believe “gara-gara” can overcome.
This is not the first time I will be hearing that about KUDA and it’s so pathetic. Why on earth will you restrict someone’s account and on coming to your office for clarification, all you do is to molest them with force on top their money.
If any of your laws are violated, closed the account and give the customer his/her overdraft.
If any crimes are committed, you do not return the loot to the suspect.
There are AML laws and regulations in Nigeria (and throughout most the globe) that requires financial institutions to freeze suspicious accounts and transactions until their bona fides can be ascertained.
Wow I have told my friend that this bank are yet to manifest their purpose if they are not mmm, I just pray may God help us
I don delete their app Tay Tay…Na police bank… Rubbish
I bet the mopol were called AFTER the customer got there. Why? Because he was shouting and making a scene due to the fact that the bank was still refusing to release his account after he presented his documents.
To me, that is the more likely scenario.
I suspect so as well. AGBERO culture has increasing pervaded the public space and mentality in Nigeria.
The freeze on his account was result of a Bank order gotten from Court to Freeze and arrest the Account owner over an Investigation. It happened to me at GTBank because of a POS payment I received. If you are innocent, just go with the Police and call a lawyer. This doesn’t make Kuda a Bad Bank. As an Ex Banker, I have seen such Bank Order as a customer service and my supervisor had to call Police to arrest the Account holder when he showed up to the Bank.
One day, very soon, kuda and all other faceless banks will just shut down and everybody’s money will be “gone too soon”.
Honestly, kuba and mgt really disappointed me as regards how they handled this issue of customers harassment. This guy came to your branch in good faith. Why can’t you respect that, at least? As long as you continued to cohabit with the Nigeria Police you will ruin your unique brand. Why not choose efcc partnership instead?
You people are using bursary department for banking transactions and you say it’s a good bank. I laugh in yoruba.
If your staff did not instruct your security man he would not have been badly manhandled the way he was. Honestly your organisation left a sour taste. And your organisation waited days after the video went viral before coming online to explain. Now question is, if you claim.no wrong doing what step or steps did you take to ameliorate the damage caused? We are waiting to read that.
Why should a customer even wait for instructions to “security men” to leave after being asked to leave a business premises?
Hate to see folks being “manhandled” but if people refuse to conduct themselves appropriately (eg, refusing to leave a place of business when asked to do so), they are asking to be treated inappropriately.
