Covid-19: Bed occupancy in Lagos falls by 36% – Health Commissioner

Lagos State says it has exited 5th Covid-19 wave

The Lagos State Government revealed that bed occupancy rates in the state’s public and private Coronavirus (COVID-19) care centres, has dropped to 36% so far this month.

This was disclosed by the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, in a statement on Tuesday, on the state’s COVID-19 status reported by the News Agency of Nigeria. He added that the bed occupancy rate dropped from the 53% reported on the 5th of September, to its present 36%.

The Commissioner added that the state presently has 263 free bed spaces out of the total 410 bed capacity in the 11 care centres.

What the Lagos State Health Commissioner said

“Lagos recorded 72 new COVID-19 infections on the reported date, increasing its confirmed infections to 76,614. The total COVID-19 tests conducted in the state since the inception of the pandemic stood at 748,098,” he said.

He also revealed that 5,049 patients have been successfully treated, recovered and discharged from the state’s private and public care centres, citing that 73% of the tests were conducted by private laboratories accredited by the state government, while 27% by the state public laboratories.

The Lagos State Health Ministry also revealed that its positivity rate currently stands at 10.2%, while its fatality rate was 0.83%, citing that the state recorded one new COVID-19 related fatality, increasing the total number of casualties to 643.

What you should know

Recall Nairametrics reported last month that the Lagos State Government revealed that it uses 400 oxygen cylinders daily on severe patients since the 3rd wave broke out in the state.

Governor Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the state invested in Lagos State BioBank to sequence positive cases for more service delivery, citing that 400 oxygen cylinders daily was an increase over the 75 cylinders utilised by severe COVID-19 cases.
