NCDC reports highest number of Covid-19 cases in 2 weeks

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported 964 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday from 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the highest number of infections in about 2 weeks.

This indicates an increase from the 444 cases reported on Friday and the country’s total infection cases now standing at 195,052, with a fatality toll of 2,522 since the inception of the virus from last year February.

This disclosure is contained in a report made by NCDC and can be seen on its verified website on Sunday morning, adding that Nigeria recorded 27 more Coronavirus deaths.

The public health agency said that Lagos State, which has been the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the country reported 456, which was the highest number of cases; Ondo followed with 180 cases, while Edo recorded the third-highest infection with 66 cases.

Others include Rivers with 62 cases, Niger with 26 cases, Akwa Ibom with 25 cases, Ekiti with 22 cases, Kwara with 22 infections, Oyo with 22 cases and Kaduna with 17 cases.

The report also shows that Delta had 14 new cases, Benue with 12 cases, Gombe with 9 cases, Plateau with 9 cases, FCT with 8 cases, Jigawa with 5 cases, Ogun with 4 new cases, Bayelsa and Nasarawa with 2 cases each, and Bauchi with just 1 new case.

The agency also noted that the country’s active coronavirus cases in Nigeria were 10,026, with a total of 182,463 cases successfully treated and discharged after recovery as of September 4.

The NCDC said that over 2.7million samples of the virus out of the nation’s roughly 200 million populations were tested.

The agency said that a multi-sectoral national Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) activated at level two continues to coordinate the national response activities.

  • Despite the recent surge in Covid-19 cases across the country, many Nigerians have abandoned the adoption of non-pharmaceutical measures like social distancing and wearing of face masks.
  • In public places, many flout the protocols while commercial buses are loading at full capacity despite the country’s confirmation of the deadly Delta variant
  • Meanwhile, the NCDC noted that with the recent surge of Covid-19 cases in the country, Nigerians must all do their part to help minimise instances of exposure.
  • The centre advised Nigerians to get vaccinated now to protect themselves, their friends and community from the virus.
