Lagos bears the brunt

Lagos State, which is the economic centre of the country, and a passage route for most international travellers bears the most number of cases from inception-to-date according to information from the NCDC.

On Wednesday, 28th of July 2021, out of the 535 cases recorded, Lagos State accounted for 219, representing 40.1% of the total. Other states being hit hard by the wild spread of the disease includes Akwa Ibom, which recorded 142 news cases on Wednesday, Oyo State with 47 and Jigawa with 13 new cases.

States with the highest number of currently admitted cases include Lagos (3,916), Akwa Ibom (445), Rivers (137), Oyo (133), and Anambra (64).

An uptick in the curve

The number of cases has skyrocketed in recent weeks, moving from 167,618 at the beginning of the month to 172,263 cases at the time of writing this article. The increase in the number of new cases has also caused a significant surge in the number of active covid-19 cases in Nigeria.

It is worth noting that the wild spread started at about the time the new delta variant was discovered in Nigeria, which is said to be highly transmissible and deadly. With a larger number of the Nigerian population yet to be vaccinated, the fear of a lockdown still looms in order to contain the spread.
