Sportswear firm, Puma is set to compete with tech giants, Apple, and Samsung as it announced the launching of its first-ever smartwatch. The gadget which will be launched in November 2019 will cost almost N100, 000 ($275).

The features: The Puma smartwatch comes with a Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipset and Google’s Android operating system for wearables, Wear OS. Other features of the watch include heart rate monitoring, GPS tracking, and Google’s virtual assistant.

The watch also comes with a nylon and an aluminum case as well as a silicone strap aimed at minimizing sweat.

Can it compete with other smartwatches?: With this move, Puma has entered into the smartwatch market which has already being crowded with technology companies such as Apple, Samsung, and Fitbit to name a few.

Apple is said to be leading the smartwatch market, having blazed the trail for others to follow in 2015. Apple has made a clear push into the health and fitness industry with its smartwatch and it may take Puma a while to be able to become a game-changer in the market.

Although, one cannot dispute the fact that Puma is already a widely recognised name in sports for its equipment and clothing, but it may be challenging to compete with tech companies -Apple and Samsung who are major players in the smartwatch market.

Puma’s leverage: Puma will have a hard job competing against these premium devices but might have a competitive edge for people willing to buy a smartwatch with a lower budget. This is due to the cheaper rate Puma intends to sell compared to other devices although it might not necessarily translate to the same quality with those already established brands.

Apple’s Watch Series 4 costs around N145,000 ($400) while Samsung’s Galaxy Watch, costs about N120,000 ($330). Therefore if your budget falls short of the aforementioned devices then the Puma TicWatch Pro is a great choice as well.
