President Muhammadu Buhari has, today, appointed Mr. Mele Kolo Kyari as the new Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), alongside 7 new Chief Operating Officers to work with the current office holders till 7th of July, 2019.

The announcement was disclosed by the Group General Manager, Group public affairs Division, of the NNPC, Mr. Ndu Ughamadu, today, in Abuja.

Kyari’s appointment: The appointment of Kyari as the new GMD of the petroleum corporation is as a result of the mandatory retirement of the outgoing GMD of the NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru, who clocks the retirement age of 60 years on 7th July, 2019. Hence, the re-appointment makes Kyari the 19th Group Managing Director of the NNPC.

Presidential directive: Meanwhile, President Buhari has directed the new GMD and the newly appointed Chief Operating Officers to work with the current occupiers of the various offices until they assume office on the 7th of July, 2019 to ensure a smooth transition on the 8th of July, 2019.

However, the appointment of Mr. Farouk Garba as the new Chief Operating Officer for the North West zone, is to take effect from 28th of June, 2019 as he is set to replace a retiring Chief Operating Officer.

Meanwhile, the outgoing GMD of the NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru, has congratulated the new appointees on their new quest.

Meet the new appointees:

Newly appointed Chief Operating Officers and the portfolios are as follows:

1. Mr. Roland Onoriode Ewubare (South-South) – Chief Operating Officer, Upstream
2. Engr. Mustapha Yinusa Yakubu (North Central) – Chief Operating Officer Refining and Petrochemicals
3. Engr. Yusuf Usman (North East) – Chief Operating Officer, Gas and Power
4. Ms. Lawrencia Nwadiabuwa Ndupu (South East), Chief Operating Officer Ventures
5. Mr. Umar Isa Ajiya (North West) – Chief Financial Officer
6. Engr. Adeyemi Adetunji (South West) – Chief Operating Officer, Downstream and
7. Mr. Farouk Garba Said (North West) – Chief Operating Officer, Corporate Services.
Brief Profile on KYARI:
Mele Kolo Kyari was born in Maiduguri, Borno state on the 8th of January, 1965. He obtained his secondary school certificate from Government Community Secondary school, Biu in Borno State between 1977 and 1982 and later in 1987, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Geology from the university of Maiduguri.
Achievements: In 2007 Kyari won the GMD Prize for the Overall Best Performance for NNPC Management Development Program, having transverse the entire value chain of the petroleum industry, with resounding records and performance in all his assignments. Same here, he was awarded the Group Executive Director (GED) Cs award for the best performance in Leadership.
Positions held:Prior to Kyari’s appointment as the GMD of NNPC, he was Nigeria’s National Representative at the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), and also doubled as the Group General Manager, Crude Oil Marketing  Division, of the NNPC. A position he held since 13th May, 2018.
