The National Pension Commission (PENCOM) said it has concluded plans to begin verification of prospective retirees across some states in Nigeria.
The acting Director-general of the National Pension Commission, Mrs. Aisha Dahir-Umar, who was represented by the Assistant General Manager of PENCOM, Malami Bunza, made this known on Thursday in Kano during a pre-retirement workshop planned for Federal Civil Servants who are due to retire by the year 2020.
Malami disclosed that the verification exercise is scheduled to hold across 18 centres in the country between 1st of July and 2nd of August, 2019. According to the PENCOM boss;
“The forthcoming exercise, therefore, necessitated the need to undertake adequate sensitization and public enlightenment in order to prepare prospective retirees on the steps to take towards a hitch-free retirement life.”
The Drive to educate Pensioners: The Pension Commission has declared that the pre-retirement workshop organised for prospective retirees in the contributory pension scheme will take place between 17th June to 25th June 2019. The workshop is planned to inform and educate the prospective retirees on the modalities for accessing retirement benefits under the CPS.
PenCom has scheduled the exercise across the following centres:Â Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa, Sokoto, Enugu, Ibadan, Lokoja, Lafia, Benin, Gombe, Bauchi, Owerri, Ilorin, Port-Harcourt, Lagos and Abuja.
Malami further stated that during the workshop three topics will be presented and treated. These include- Enrollment Exercise and Documentation requirements, Life in Retirement, and Accessing Retirement under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
Malami expressed optimism that the training is expected to help prepare the retirees for retirement.
“It is our hope that the workshop would inform participants on what they need to know on documentation requirements, payments of retirement benefits and best ways to enjoy life in retirement“.
“We are, therefore, looking forward to fruitful deliberations at this workshop and feel free to make suggestions during and after these workshops about issues that may further help to make retirement life more comfortable to you and future retirees”.
In the meantime, the National Pension Commission has released guidelines for the contributory pension scheme which is hoped that upon full execution of the guidelines, Nigeria, as a nation will have a pension system that is sustainable, with the capacity to attain the ultimate goal of providing a stable and adequate source of retirement income for Nigerian employees.
