The Federal Government has approved the appointment of Prof. Suleiman Bogoro, as the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).
Bogoro’s appointment follows the removal of Abdullahi Baffa as the agency’s Executive Secretary.
Bogoro was Executive Secretary between April 2014 and February 2016. Subsequently, Baffa was appointed to replace him.
According to a statement issued by Ben Goong, Deputy Director, Information, Ministry of Education, Bogoro’s appointment is with immediate effect, and the reinstatement was also with the same terms and conditions as it were in his previous appointment and as stipulated in the TETFUND staff conditions of service.
Baffa was an aide to the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu. The sacked Executive Secretary was appointed the head of TETFund alongside 14 other heads of parastatals in the education ministry on August 2, 2016.
An unconfirmed report has it that Baffa had been having a misunderstanding with Adamu, particularly as it concerns 2019 intervention.
About TETFUND
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund was established as an intervention agency under the TETFund ACT – Tertiary Education Trust Fund(Establishment, etc) Act, 2011; charged with the responsibility for managing, disbursing and monitoring the education tax to public tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
In order to enable the TETFund to achieve the above objectives, TETFUND ACT, 2011 imposes a 2 per cent (2%) Education Tax on the assessable profit of all registered companies in Nigeria.
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is empowered by the Act to assess and collect Education Tax. The Fund administers the tax imposed by the Act and disburses the amount to tertiary educational institutions at Federal and State levels . It also monitors the projects executed with the funds allocated to the beneficiaries.
The mandate of the Fund as provided in Section 7(1)(a) to (e) of the TETFUND ACT, 2011 is to administer and disburse the amount in the Fund to Federal and State tertiary educational institutions.
