Information reaching Nairametrics has confirmed that the Ikeja City Mall outlet of Krispy Kreme Confectionary is also closed. This was confirmed by a staff of the company who did not want to be identified. He said the Ikeja outlet get supplies from their Victoria Island outlet and since it has been shut down it also affected business activities.
Krispy Kreme Victoria Island outlet was sealed by the Consumers Protection Commission (CPC) and National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), led by CPC Director General, Babatunde Irukera, after an inspection of the facility and it was discovered that the company had tampered with the expiry date of its doughnut mix and fillings.
A customer, Tobi said that there may be more to the sealing of the outlet. He said it could have been orchestrated by big players who are in competition with Krispy Kreme since the company got approval from the manufacturers of their doughnut mix and fillings for the expiry date change as noticed by the CPC. He said it is a normal practice on such products if there are still safe to use. Tobi further said most sausage roll snack companies in the country do this too.
Food may contain bacteria and if stored for too long or at the wrong temperature, can cause food poisoning. So it’s important to understand the different types of dates and advice on food packaging, this is according to the United Kingdom’s Food Standard Agency.
A ‘use by date’ on food is about safety. This is the most important date to remember. Foods can be eaten until the use by date but not after. The ‘best before date’ is about quality and not safety. The food will be safe to eat after this date but may not be at its best. Its flavour and texture might not be as good.
According to Irukera, the concealed date is a used by date, which suggests that the raw materials were no longer safe to use.
Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corporation, a United States-based food company formally made its entrance into the Nigerian market in March 2018.
At the pre-launch of their doughnuts at the Ikeja City Mall, Alexander Trotter, Director of quality foods for Africa, partner of the US-based firm noted that the firm has two investments valued at $7 million in the country.
The company also signed a development agreement with Quality Foods Africa (Q.F.A.) to open 20 Krispy Kreme locations in Nigeria over a period of five years.
Nigeria is the second African nation to open Krispy Kreme shops. Krispy Kreme made its African debut in South Africa in 2015, when the company signed a development agreement with KK Doughnuts SA (Pty) Limited to open 31 Krispy Kreme locations in South Africa.
