As Nigeria grapples with the exit of the Etisalat brand, available data from the NCC shows that embattled 9mobile (formerly Etisalat) gained more subscribers than any other network in the month of May 2017.
According to the report on the website of the NCC , the telecommunication company had an increase in the number of new subscribers in the month of May before the recent Saga. 9 Mobile’s former technical partners, Etisalat UAE pulled out in late June 2017 and withdrew its brand name rights last week.
This is the last time the NCC report will feature the brand name “Etisalat” in its report and the last time it will take credit for anything positive for the country’s 4th largest mobile network.
Analysis of the report
Data from the National Communication commission, shows 9mobile formerly known as Etisalat recorded the highest number of incoming porting for the month of May, 2017.
A total of 39,535 subscribers ported from one network to another in the month may, which is a 17.1% increase from 33,773 recorded in the month of April.
Out of this, a total number of 15,253 subscriber ported to Etisalat (9mobile) in the month of May, representing a 26.2% increase from the 12,087 recorded by the network in the month of April.
The data also showed that the network had the highest number of new subscriber in the month, with 76.97% of the total inward porting in the month of May.
The network recorded the lowest number of Outward porting of 1,826 subscribers for the month of May, representing a 5.7% decrease 1937 recorded in the previous month.

Some analysts we spoke to believe the trend may reverse by the time July report is out sometime in September. It is expected that the impact of the negative news surrounding its withdrawal will be known by the time this report is made public.
What Inward and outward porting means
Incoming porting means the number of numbers porting from another service provider’s network into a service provider’s own network.
Outgoing porting on the other hand is the number of numbers porting to another service providers’ network from a service provider’s own network.
