Having visited different countries and interesting tourist sites all around the world, I realised Hong Kong stands out for so many reasons. I had read quite a lot about Hong Kong and I was fascinated by the structures I saw online.

When did you embark on the trip?

I usually go on holidays at the beginning of every year, so in January 2016, I decided to visit Hong Kong.

What would a first-timer find particularly impressive on arrival in Hong Kong?

The first thing that catches your eye  upon arriving in Hong Kong is the beautiful airport and the impeccable politeness of the immigration officers. As a top tourist destination in Asia, its lure of shopping and plethora of dining options will also blow you away. It has the most skyscrapers in the world, with 8,000 buildings having more than 14 floors; almost double that of New York.

 Are its people friendly?

The people of Hong Kong are very polite and extremely courteous. You will be amazed when you meet them. Hong Kongers made me feel at home. It felt as though I was in Lagos and one of the very important factors that excited me was the ‘oriental’ fashion sense of the nationals. I noticed that the average Hong Konger puts quite a bit more effort into their dressing, hair and fashion accessories.

Did the fact that you are a Nigerian impact on their relationship with you?

When I arrived, they thought I was an American but immediately I made my nationality known, they became a bit more careful in their dealings with me. Most of the things they know about Nigeria are majorly what they  have seen on CNN and BBC. Some of them also have a fair knowledge about Nigeria and this is  from their interaction with Nigerians they have met.

Did you experience any culture shock?

Well, I honestly found their politeness a bit too much and the culture shock that really hit me hard was the speed at which they moved. Although the people in New York move really fast, in Hong Kong , they move even faster.

What are Hong Kongers renowned for?

In Hong Kong, mealtimes are really special. They like to observe every meal but dinner is more religiously observed especially among family members.

What places of interest did you visit?

One very remarkable and memorable site I visited was the Stanley Market. Its peak is the highest point in Hong Kong. It gives an awesome view of the city; you can virtually see the entire city from that point.

What would you consider the most interesting activity you engaged in?

As a fashion and lifestyle entrepreneur, I was amazed at the speed at which they finish a custom outfit. The way the tailors go about their craft is quite interesting and inspiring.

Did you find the food and culture to be as interesting as the sights and sounds?

One thing I liked about the food and culture is the way Hong Kongers sit down on the dinner table and break bread to eat. It’s so beautiful to watch the nationals eat their meals in unison.

What was your most profound experience during the trip?

The speed at which the metro worked is breathtaking. Aside from air travels, I don’t think I have ever been on such a fast and comfortable metro train in my life.

Does Nigeria share any similarities with Hong Kong?

Well there are no similarities as regards culture from what I observed, but I can tell you some differences. In Hong Kong, I saw parents sit with their 28 or 20-year-olds to smoke in the work place or sometimes after meals. In the Igbo culture where I come from, it’s an unthinkable sight.

If you had to import a technology from Hong Kong to Nigeria, what would it be?

That will definitely be the speed rail technology. Hong Kong has one of the most efficient and clean metro systems in the world. I always wish I could borrow or import it sooner or later to Nigeria.

Why would you love to visit Hong Kong again?

Hong Kong is a country I will want to visit over and over again. I loved everything about the city aside from the high cost of living.
