President Muhammadu Buhari has been called on by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to take a stand on the creation of a new agency in the industry, the Electricity Management Services Limited as the mandate of the new agency was in conflict with the work of NERC.
Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Sam Amadi, made the call at a ceremony in Abuja on Thursday to announce the appointment of 14 technical inspectors for the electricity industry.
The EMS was created towards the end of the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan and, according to him, to allow the EMS to exist will amount to creating two regulators for the electricity industry.
As such, the NERC had remained consistent in opposing the creation of the new agency, adding that it went to the extent of writing the former president to explain the grounds for its opposition.
The EMS has responsibility for specifying technical standards for electricity companies and ensuring that they comply with the standards; a responsibility that NERC says it has the legal duty to perform
