The Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox, popularly known as MMM, is the talk on the Nigerian streets now. In fact, it is almost considered an anomaly if you are not yet engaged in the scheme. The controversial scheme, however, has died acrimonious deaths in other African countries, South Africa and Zimbabwe included, especially after government agencies either publicly showed disowned the scheme or out rightly sought its closure. In Nigeria, the case is different. Actually, it is opposite. Governments attention to the MMM scheme has only reinforced Nigerians’ desire to participate in the scheme with numbers ever growing daily. These are 4 reasons why government’s attention only help increase business for the scheme.
- Nigerians are never satisfied with government decisions
Can we actually remember a time that Nigerians obeyed a government order without some kind of complaint or protest against it? Left, right or center, Nigerians somewhere are never satisfied with government decisions and seek to frustrate them. The planned bout on MMM only presented another opportunity to kick against the government and Nigerians are taking it woth two hands.
- Government is seen as a hypocrite
The order of the House of Representatives to go after the scheme generated several reactions from the public but the most common was anger at the Reps. Nigerians wonder why people who are using the tax on common Nigerians to feed fat would come after a scheme that promises to make their life better. Nigeria runs one of the most expensive legislatures in the world, yet output is abysmally poor. Another very common proof of disgruntled Nigerians is the nation’s flailing economy which is radically deteriorating every day while the government is utterly confused and seems not to have a way out.
- Government only exposed its feebleness by its order
It would have been a different case if the Reps had thought their decision through before publicizing it. Their public declaration followed by an almost immediate reply from the EFCC of their inability to carry out the assigned task showed government’s inabilities to the country. The eyes of Nigerians were opened, so to speak. If the government does not have what it takes to come after MMM, why not participate?
- Government has a long history of anti-people laws
Does this even need explanation? From their wages to approving purchase of special cars for themselves while they consider higher and harder taxes on the crushed masses, the government has hardly endeared itself to the Nigerian populace. That is why the first reaction of Nigerians on hearing the order was to doubt the sincerity of their actions.
All said and done, it seems that with the actions of the Reps and the EFCC on the MMM scheme, they just provided free adverts for the scheme. For any Nigerian who was unaware of the scheme before, the government’s actions made them aware. For any who were scared about government crackdown, they have now been reassured. Government just played itself into the hands of the people.
absolutely right.
