Tinubu seeks expedited senate approval
The presidential aide also disclosed that Tinubu had approved the appointment of Mrs Jumoke Gafar as Secretary to the Board/Authority and Legal Adviser, subject to the completion of statutory processes under Section 46 of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).
Onanuga said the President had urged the Senate to consider the nominations expeditiously to ensure institutional continuity and strengthen the Authority’s oversight capacity.

What you should know
In April 2026, President Tinubu approved the removal of Saidu Mohammed as Chief Executive of the NMDPRA and nominated Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as his replacement.
Umar’s appointment brought more than 25 years of experience spanning the energy, manufacturing and infrastructure sectors.
The Presidency said the leadership change was made in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021, with the aim of strengthening oversight in the petroleum sector and improving regulatory performance.
According to the Presidency, Umar brings extensive leadership experience and a record of driving operational and strategic transformation across industries.
It also stated that pending Senate confirmation, the most senior official within the NMDPRA would oversee the agency’s operations in an acting capacity.
Mohammed’s removal came just four months after he assumed office, following the exit of his predecessor, Farouk Ahmed. The latest nominations therefore represent another phase in the restructuring of the Authority’s leadership.
