Nigeria’s Healthcare Gap Is a $12 Billion Investment Opportunity—But Execution Will Decide the Winners

Nigeria’s healthcare system presents a paradox: it is both underperforming and overburdened, yet increasingly one of the most compelling investment frontiers in Africa.

Despite a population exceeding 240 million, public health spending remains below 4% of total government expenditure, far short of the 15% Abuja Declaration target.

At the same time, nearly 72% of healthcare costs are financed out-of-pocket, placing Nigeria among the highest globally and exposing households to significant financial risk.

The system’s inefficiencies are not just a social concern, they represent a measurable economic leakage. Nigeria loses an estimated $1.2 billion annually to medical tourism, as patients seek care abroad due to gaps in quality, capacity, and trust.

However, these gaps are also signals of opportunity.

According to a recent research by Verraki, closing Nigeria’s hospital bed deficit alone requires over $12 billion in capital investment. Yet, the opportunity set extends well beyond infrastructure. High-growth segments such as diagnostics, digital health, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and healthcare supply chains are emerging as attractive entry points for private capital.

What makes the sector particularly compelling for investors is the nature of demand. Healthcare is non-discretionary. As population growth, urbanisation, and disease burden increases, demand will continue to rise, regardless of macroeconomic cycles.

Importantly, the private sector is already deeply embedded in the system, delivering over 60% of healthcare services. However, this participation remains fragmented and constrained by limited scale, infrastructure deficits, and weak integration across the value chain.

For investors, the question is no longer whether the opportunity exists, but how to execute effectively within a complex operating environment.

Nigeria’s healthcare market is not a passive investment landscape. Regulatory fragmentation, weak data systems, infrastructure challenges, and health workforce migration all introduce execution risk. Investors who underestimate these factors often face delays, cost overruns, and suboptimal returns.

Conversely, successful investments are those that combine capital with local insight, disciplined execution, and strong operational models.

Equally critical is the role of government. Expanding health insurance coverage remains the single most important lever for improving revenue predictability and unlocking private capital. Without this, demand remains real, but monetisation remains uncertain.

Nigeria’s healthcare sector is transitioning, from a development challenge to an investment thesis. But unlocking its full potential will require coordinated action across policy, capital, and execution.

Verraki’s report, “Private Sector Investment in Nigeria’s Health Sector: High-Return Capital in a System Under Strain,” provides a deeper analysis of where these opportunities lie, and what it will take to capture them.

The opportunity is significant. The question is: who is positioned to execute? Visit www.verraki.africa to download the full report.
