The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration has announced an investment of $1.05 billion for the development of infrastructure in the education sector.

This was announced by the Minister of the FCT, Mr. Nyesom Wike, at the 6th International Conference on Learning Cities held in Jubail, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The event, themed “Learning Cities at the Forefront of Climate Action,” gathered representatives from UNESCO learning cities, policymakers, educators, researchers, and other global stakeholders to discuss how cities can use education to drive climate action and sustainable development.

The conference highlighted the growing importance of education in tackling climate challenges and promoting environmental awareness worldwide.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Wike, who was represented by Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, the Minister of State for the FCT, shared the details of the investment.

In another statement by Mr. Austine Elemue, the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of State, FCT, mentioned that this amount includes a counterpart funding of N3.5 billion from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

Annual education budget surpasses UNESCO benchmark

According to NAN, the FCTA’s annual education budget has exceeded the UNESCO benchmark of 26%, indicating the administration’s focus on improving the education system.

  • The budget allocation, as stated, is aimed at addressing infrastructure gaps, teacher development, and expanding access to quality education across the region.
  • To date, reports inform that 21 primary and junior secondary schools have been renovated, while 30 new senior secondary schools have been established to cater to the growing educational needs.
  • The FCTA is also investing in the retraining of teachers and upgrading school facilities in basic education across the six area councils in the FCT.

Focus on tertiary education development

In addition to primary and secondary education, the FCT Administration is also focusing on the development of tertiary education. The administration has committed N14.53 billion for the completion of the FCT University in Abaji, which is expected to enhance higher education in the territory.

Abuja learning city and its role in peacebuilding

The FCTA’s efforts align with the objectives of UNESCO’s Learning City initiative. The Abuja Learning City program which focuses on promoting peace, security, and tolerance through education, is applying a whole-school approach to incorporate these values into the education system.

The program seeks to create a sustainable educational environment that encourages collaboration and understanding.
