The Aerodrome Emergency Training School at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) in Zaria has been officially accredited by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) as the nation’s authorized provider of Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) training.

The accreditation, awarded at NCAA’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, is the first of its kind in Nigeria, promoting safety and standardization across the aviation sector.

Acting Rector of NCAT, Mr. Joseph Imalighwe, received the accreditation certificate on behalf of the institution.

The announcement was shared via NCAA’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday.

“The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) today, Tuesday, October 29, 2024 has issued certificate of accreditation to the Aerodrome Emergency Training School of the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria as provider of Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) training in Nigeria,” the statement read in part.

It added, “It is worthy to note that the accreditation of ARFF training by NCAA, which is the first time to be conducted in Nigeria, will enhance safety and standardization of ARFF training across the industry.”

More insight

The statement highlighted that the accreditation of the Aerodrome Emergency Training School at NCAT will significantly benefit the aviation sector by promoting safety and standardizing Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) training across the industry.

For the NCAA, it reinforces regulatory compliance, ensuring that aviation personnel meet global safety standards. The statement emphasized that the accreditation strengthens NCAT’s reputation as a premier aviation training institution, attracting more enrollment and enhancing its global recognition.

On a broader scale, this development positions Nigeria as a key player in international aviation. Increased enrollment could lead to positive foreign exchange inflows, while the country gains recognition from both domestic and international stakeholders.

Additionally, it noted that NCAT’s improved profile will enhance eligibility for funding opportunities, contributing to the long-term growth of the aviation sector. This alignment with global standards ultimately boosts Nigeria’s standing in the aviation industry and ensures a safer, more resilient aviation infrastructure.

What you should know

The Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) in Zaria, Kaduna State, is one of three NCAA-approved institutions offering pilot training in Nigeria, alongside the International Aviation College (IAC) in Ilorin, Kwara State, and the International Helicopter Flying School in Emene, Enugu State.

Pilot training at NCAT costs approximately N23 million (as of 2024) with installment payment options, covering Ground School, flight training, simulator exercises, solo flights, and advanced training.

The recent accreditation of NCAT to provide Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) training further broadens the college’s scope in aviation education.
