The French Government has reported its first case of the Omicron variant from a person who recently returned from Nigeria.
This was announced by the French health ministry on Thursday, according to Reuters.
Jean-Francois Delfraissy, the French government’s top scientific adviser said the Omicron variant could become dominant in the country by the end of January, adding that the Delta variant is still the dominant enemy.
Delfraissy told BFM television, “We should see a progressive rise of the Omicron variant, which will take over from Delta.
“Christmas is not at risk if the population and decision-makers are all very cautious.”
The Omicron variant first discovered in Southern Africa has quickly spread around the world, with many countries reporting cases of the mutated variant, which has seen Canada ban travel from Nigeria following cases developing in the North American country from recently returned passengers from Nigeria.
Nairametrics recently reported that Canada-bound Nigerian travellers have expressed disappointment in the travel ban issued by the Canadian government on travellers from Nigeria following the detection of the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus in the country.
While some of the travellers were hoping to travel to the North American country for holidays, others had set their eyes on permanent immigration to what is usually termed “greener pasture”. Unfortunately, the hopes of leaving the country anytime soon may have just been dashed by the announcement of the travel ban.
