President Muhammadu Buhari has again warned that the Federal Government remains ready to take decisive actions against secessionist agitators and their sponsors who threaten national security.

This is as the president revealed that the Federal Government has already identified high-profile financiers of these agitators, which also includes a serving member of the National Assembly.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the warning was issued by the President during a nationwide broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 61st Independence Anniversary on Friday, in Abuja. President Buhari vowed that his administration will arrest and prosecute those who he said incite violence with their words and action and insisted that the unity of the country is non-negotiable.

What President Buhari is saying

President Buhari in his words said, “The recent arrests of Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Adeyemo and the ongoing investigations being conducted have revealed certain high profile financiers behind these individuals.  We are vigorously pursuing these financiers, including one identified as a serving member of the National Assembly.

“This is a clear example of how people abandon their national leadership positions for their selfish gains. Instead of preaching unity, they are funding and misleading our youth to conduct criminal acts that sometimes lead to unfortunate and unnecessary loss of lives and property.

“As the so-called leaders run abroad to hide, our innocent youths are misled and left in the streets to fight for their senseless and destructive causes.’’

President Buhari, however, gave the assurance on the improvement of the security architecture of the country as the government would continue, with a greater level of peoples’ participation and collaboration with international partners.

He said the Federal Government would also reduce the enabling environment that allowed criminality to thrive and eliminate opportunities for terrorism financing in the country.

What you should know

The security crisis in the country appears to have continued unabated with increasing calls for secession by different groups across the country.

The activities of some of these groups have intensified in recent times with increasing cases of violence and some casualties involved.

This has been made worse with the recent incarceration of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) which has led to increased violence with several deaths reported in the South-Eastern part of the country.
