SoundCloud creates ‘donation button’ for fans to support Nigerian artistes, others affected by Coronavirus
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Linkedin

SoundCloud has created a donation button for artistes to get support, as the Coronavirus outbreak forced some of them to cancel their concerts.

The music streaming company explained that the donation button would enable fans to donate money to their favourite singers.
It advised that artistes can place the donation button  on their Soundcloud profiles to solicit funds for any purpose, be it rent or album.

Meanwhile, several artistes have been affected by the Coronavirus pandemic, as event organisers cancelled shows, suspended tours, while some have postponed release dates for their singles because of their inability to go for recording.

In a statement issued by SoundCloud and seen by Nairametrics, it said, “Over the past few weeks, we’ve been providing resources for artists to keep the music going, but with the financial repercussions of cancelled shows and listeners asking how they can support the artists they love – we knew there was more we could do.

“So, we have created a simple button for your profile where fans can instantly and directly show their support. All you have to do is choose where you want to send followers, give them a little context on what they’re supporting, and then let the world know by sharing on your socials.”

The company added that, “We’ve built this feature to help creators impacted by the COVID-19 virus and will keep it active as long as we’re all in this so you can fund your projects, offset bills, or get whatever you need to stay on your feet.”

How COVID-19 is affecting Nigerian entertainers?

The COVID-19 outbreak has affected the entertainment industry in Nigeria. Movie production, comedy shows, and music concerts have all been put on hold, except for the ones that took their shows to their social media Platforms.

For instance, Singer Asa cancelled her ‘Lucid Tour’ for her new album ‘Lucid’, Davido cancelled his  ‘A good time tour’. Comedians ‘I Go Dye’ and AY have also been affected.

In a recent tweet to one of his followers who requested for assistance, Davido responded, “No money for now .. no show in sight abeg .. we all Dey here together! #unity.”

He had planned to tour North America before the COVID-19 outbreak hit the continent and Europe.

Most artistes have now turned to social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube for live performances, although most of the Social Media Live shows are performed for free. The likes of Asa, Timi Dakolo and many others have organised theirs.

How artistes can use the donation button:

  • Click the “Edit” button on the top right side of your profile page on the web.
  • In the “Edit your Profile” pop-up, click “Add support link” to add a link to financial exchanges or online stores like Kickstarter, Bandcamp, Patreon, Paypal and more (full list of supported platforms can be accessed here – SoundCloud never takes a cut).
  • Hit “Save changes” to generate a Support button on your profile that’s visible above your stats and on your track pages.
  • Use your bio to let fans know what they’re supporting – whether it’s your rent for the month or the album you dropped this week.
  • Promote on socials, so your day-ones know there’s a way to help you beyond playing your tracks on repeat.
