Twitter Lite app launches in Nigeria, 23 other countries

Twitter Lite, the space-saving version of Twitter’s main app has landed on the local Google Play stores of 24 countries. The app is meant to take up a tiny bit of space on phones, at about 3MB, and — importantly for places with patchy coverage — support offline usage via caching.

You may recall that Twitter had launched the app in the Philippines back in September to conduct some on-the-ground user research, which yielded positive feedback. People appreciated its small size, its ability to use minimal amounts of data and to load quickly in a country not exactly known for blazing fast internet speeds.

“Based on these positive results,” Twitter product manager Jesar Shah said, “we have decided to bring it to more people around the world.”

The app will also allow users to choose which pictures or videos to download in their stream, so they don’t waste data auto-downloading everything.
