Chevron and its Joint Venture (JV) partners in the Agbami field have awarded 15,000 scholarships to Medical and Engineering students across the country since inception of the scholarship scheme in 2009.
The JV partners include the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Famfa Oil, Statoil Ltd and Petrobras Ltd. Famfa is controlled by the Alakija family while Statoil and Petrobras are state controlled oil companies belonging to Norway and Brazil respectively. The Agbami field, which is located deep offshore commenced operations in 2008.
The scholarships worth ₦7.5 billion naira were awarded under the aegis of Starwood Deepwater Petroleum Limited, operators of the field. The scholarship scheme currently has 6500 beneficiaries, and has produced 315 First Class honours. In addition to the scholarships, the JV partners also donated science laboratories and libraries across the country.
