Government As Publisher
The Special Assistant to the President on Digital/New Media, Mr Tolu Ogunlesi has revealed that the government is now taking its role as a Publisher more seriously. He explained this at the second edition of the Presidential Economic Communication Workshop held in Abuja.
According to him, by being a Publisher, the government positions itself to better communicate and defend its policies. He explained that the government was already doing this via some of its channels like NTA and its social media handles, however this time it was willing to do more.
Social Media
The government is now expected to be more active in social media, produce video content, podcasts etc. in a bid to better inform and communicate its activities. Social media handle’s will also now be archived as part of keeping historical communications and comments of past governments.
On official channels, Mr Ogunlesi projected the following as the government’s official channels.
MDA’s
The Government has also concluded plans to issue more gazettes and press releases more frequently as part of its new communication plans.
On activities of other Ministries and Department of Government, he revealed that efforts were being undertaken to ensure that their social media assets are managed professionally and seen as an effective channel to report government activities.
New Government Website
He also explained that before now, the Nigerian Government did not have a website and that he was excited to announce that a new website is being created that will contain all necessary information about government and its MDA’s.
The Obasanjo Government has the nigeriafirst.org website which it used to communicate government activities. However, the website is now defunct and was not upgraded or updated by the previous administration.
The new website planned by the Buhari Government, is therefore seen as a larger attempt to create an official website for the government that will remain long after this government is gone and will contain information, policies, pictures, videos, messages, reports, commentary etc. that will be archived forever for future generations to access.
This he said was what was obtainable in most advanced countries.
