Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, has announced that the Federal Government will be completing the Lagos-Kano Rail project in 2018.
According to Premium Times The minister said when the project is completed it will generate 250,000 jobs to help curb unemployment in the country.
“For the Lagos-Kano and Lagos-Calabar rail project, we expect to generate like 250,000 employment opportunities both formal and informal.
“We are negotiating with General Electric in America to construct a narrow gauge from Lagos to Kano and they cannot run that without training Nigerians.
“If the communication system goes down how do we revive it, so they would also teach Nigerians how to maintain it.
” If we want to replace it, how do we replace it, so the key thing is transfer of technology and that will be the focus of the ministry.”
He further stated that a training institute which will be owned and managed by a Chinese company in charge of the contract will be established to help educate Nigerians on how to manage and operate the facility in order to prevent accidents or vandalization.
