Rivers State lawmakers yesterday gave nod to Governor Chibuike Amaechi’s request of a N100billion bond.

The lawmakers, who held their plenary at the old Auditorium of Government House, Port Harcourt, granted the request based on the Governor’s letter asking them to authorise the issuance of the bond.

Reading the letter to members, the Speaker, Otelemaba Dan-Amachree, said: “The purpose of the bond is to finance on-going infrastructure project outlined in the 2014 budget presentation by the Governor.”

He said the bond was included in the recently passed budget, which brought the total figure to N485billion, pointing out that without the approval of the House, the bond will not be issued and this will reduce the budget by N100billion.

Before commencing the debate on the bond request, the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Leyii Kwanee, suggested that since there are many projects scattered all over the state, it would be expedient to approve the request to enable the government complete them.

He said despite the crisis rocking the assembly, no amount of intimidation would stop the lawmakers from legislating for the benefit of Rivers people. He urged his colleagues to approve the Governor’s request to avoid hindering the development of the state.
