Uber to enlist 1million female drivers by 2020

In a bid to stem-the-tide of reported cases of sexual assaults on passengers  by its drivers, ride-hailing app Uber, has pledged to sign up one million female drivers globally by 2020. Uber had earlier issued guidelines to drivers operating on its platform.

General Manager Uber West Africa, Lola Kassim, stated this when she hosted a selection of female driver-partners, professionals and entrepreneurs in Lagos at an event it tagged: Uber For Her. 

“We have a global vision of upskilling and economically empowering 1 million women across the world by 2020. We know Nigerian women to be very industrious, focused and entrepreneurial, and luckily for us at Uber, we have a good number of them partnering with us as driver-partners. This event is essentially to allow other female attendees see the sort of economic opportunities they can benefit from if they use the Uber app.” Kasssim said.

Speaking at the event, Head of Policy West Africa for Uber, Jackie Omotalade, also restated Uber’s commitmment to economically empowering women.

“Uber is committed to promoting diversity and inclusiveness for the amazing women of West Africa. This event is an opportunity for us to continue to empower women and to show them the many ways they can thrive economically and be successful as individuals. If we are going to further develop the African continent, then it is imperative that we seriously focus on the task of upskilling our Nigerian women.” She said.

Participants at the event are of the opinion that women can achieve anything they set their minds to achieve, and advised them never look down on themselves because of their gender.

Partnering with a global brand like Uber helps women to understand how to build my their business better and ensure they always provide customers with excellent customer experience.

Uber currently has 2 million drivers in 77 countries and 616 cities worldwide. In the United States, about 14 percent of its 160,000 drivers are female.

    Have an idea how to keep both driver and client safe. Especially with the rating of drivers and clients behavior ratio. This idea will save a lot of troubles and gain a lot of trust.
