One of the first asks embarked upon by the Buhari administration was the elimination of the Boko Haram sect, who as at 2015 was one of the most feared terrorist groups in the world. The strategies employed by the military seems to have worked, with successes recorded a far improvement over the confused nature of the previous administration. That is until a few weeks back when Boko Haram started gaining ground on the military, winning key battles again.
The Chief of Defense Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin, has admitted though, that a careful synopsis of the recent trend and the military’s operations revealed that the military had gaps that they had overlooked which led to the seeming resurgence of the terrorists.
“Notwithstanding these achievements, the Defense Headquarters has reviewed some past and ongoing joint operations and identified some gaps in the planning and execution of these operations, “he said. The loss of top military commanders and other soldiers in high powered military operations comes as a shock to the military as well.
He however, said that these gaps had been identified and steps are already in place to fill these gaps to ensure continued success against the terrorist group. The CDS, who was represented at the occasion by the Chief of Administration, Defence Headquarters, Rear Admiral Andrew Dacosta was delivering the keynote address at the opening ceremony of the Advanced Joint Operations Planning Course in Abuja.
The course was “designed to further enhance the understanding of participants in all the processes required for a successful planning and execution of joint operations”, ThisDay reports.
