President Barack Obama arrived Cuba on Sunday, thus becoming the first American President to visit in nearly nine decades.
Obama arrived Havana with his wife, Michelle, their daughters, Sasha and Malia; and his mother-in-law, Marian Robinson.
The U.S President is eager to push decades of acrimony deeper into the past and forge irreversible ties with America’s former enemy.
America severed diplomatic relations with Cuba in 1961 after President Fidel Castro’s revolution sparked fears of communism spreading to the Western Hemisphere.
Obama plans to stroll through Old Havana on Sunday and attend an exhibition baseball game between an American major-league team and Cuban players on Tuesday.
Obama is accompanied by a large entourage of members of Congress from the republican and the democratic parties eager to support his call to lift the trade embargo against Cuba.
According to said Norberto Fajardo, a Cuban,
“Obama’s visit represents the end of the embargo, which is what Cubans want the most,”
“Cubans are friends of the American people. I believe it’s a win-win.”
Obama will meet with President Raul Castro but not with the Cuban strongman,Fidel Castro, the 89-year-old architect of Cuba’s revolution.
