The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
He was arrested at the Muritala Muhammad Airport, Lagos State on Thursday following alleged financial crimes allegations, according to Punch newspapers.
Oluomo was arrested after failing to honour several invitations by the anti-graft agency.
According to reports, he was accused of forging signatures for financial documents of the assembly.
Backstory
- In June 2021, the EFCC commenced a probe of the state house of assembly upon a petition it received over alleged financial misappropriation.
- The EFCC wrote a letter requesting information on all the House’s budget appropriations and allocations of from May 30, 2015, to 2021.
- Following this, the speaker filed a suit against the EFCC seeking an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the EFCC from taking further steps including but not limited to inviting, interrogating, imposing obligations, and demanding or requiring their attendance in connection with the criminal allegation made against them.
- According to reports, the speaker and other members of the house had asked the EFCC to furnish them with a copy of the said petition against them which they failed to, thereby leading to them filing a suit against the EFCC.
