MTN Nigeria is creatively sensitizing its customers on the need to ensure safety for themselves amid the spread of Coronavirus in the country.

Just as it released precautionary measures for its staff, MTN is sensitising its customers to ‘Stay Safe’ with its network bar.

Nairametrics understands that MTN customers are now noticing the change on their mobile phones, as ‘Stay Safe’ sits on the top-left corner of their devices.

The telco happens to be the only telecommunication company using its network bar to sensitise its customers, as other telcos, Airtel, 9mobile and Globacom have not done such. MTN is also the only telecoms operator that has ordered staff to work from home as a means of curbing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

As Nairametrics reported, in a notification signed by the company’s secretary, Uto Ukpanah, MTN had announced the following measures:

  • From Monday, March 23, most of its staff would start working from home as the company assured that its operations would continue to run at full scale with essential staff working limited hours on site.
  • As part of a concerted effort to support its customers, MTN Nigeria would help amplify government’s sensitization efforts using more channels to deliver health and safety information and would suspend fees for all money transfers using its Momo Agent network.
  • The company will temporarily close some of its stores. The ones that will remain open will operate reduced hours and maintain strict hygiene and social distancing measures.

MTN put these measures in place as it expressed deep concern over the coronavirus pandemic that has become a global threat and is closely monitoring the situation as it unfolds. It believes that companies should contain the escalating outbreak and safeguard operations so that economies can keep moving and societies can continue to function, as part of their corporate social responsibility.

Meanwhile, Nigeria now has 40 active cases of the virus dubbed COVID-19. While two persons, who tested positive of the virus, have been discharged after recovering, the country had recorded the death of one person, who died of the virus in Abuja.

This news is false because Airtel changed their network bar name to “Be safe Airtel” since last week. This was way before MTN did.
